This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) Union and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.

Hours of Work: Tuesday & Wednesday 10:15 a.m. – 7:15 p.m.; Thursday – Saturday 9:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.
Location: Mountain View Library, 120 Bragaw St., Anchorage, AK 99508
Work Arrangement: Remote work schedule opportunities may be considered after successful completion of probation, at the discretion of management and with the approval of the department head. Not all positions are eligible for remote work per P&P 40-40.
Legal Authorization: Applicants must be legally authorized to work and accept employment in the United States. The Municipality of Anchorage is not able to provide sponsorship for visas, including Student or Employment Visas.
Responsibilities
- Assist the public with the circulation of materials.
- Help patron material needs through charging, discharging, and library card registration.
- Provide technology assistance and quick reference using the Integrated Library System or online public access computers.
- Assist patrons with self‑checkout machines, copiers, the library website, databases, and the Automated Handling System.
- Coach and train Library Assistant I and II staff.
- Schedule staff to cover the circulation desk.
- Support understaffed library locations and assist with special projects.
- Assist with library programs both inside and outside the library.
- Resolve patron account questions, accept fines and fees with the cash register or card reader.
- Prepare and take bank deposits.
- Serve as the main point of contact for cash journal entries.
- Coordinate volunteers.
- Empty book drops, shelve, sort, answer phones, ship, and route materials to other locations.
- Assist with bus pass sales, voter registration, passport applications, and other revenue‑generating opportunities.
- Receive office supplies.
- Establish and maintain effective relations with coworkers, the public, and vendors.
- Treat everyone with honesty, respect, and fairness.
- Assist in APL's diversity and inclusiveness efforts.
- Ensure excellent customer service and a positive user experience while being an efficient team member.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and at least 18 months of customer service and/or library experience.
- Associate’s degree in Library Science or a related discipline and at least six months of customer service and/or library experience.
- Passport Acceptance Agent Certification within six months of hire.
Background Check
Employment is conditional upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160 and AS 12.62.400). All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
Military Service Interview Preference
Veterans, or individuals who wish to be considered for interview preference, must attach authorized documentation proving veteran status or current National Guard/Reserve service. The minimum qualifications must be met for preference consideration.
