Overview

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee. This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) Union and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.

HOURS OF WORK: Tuesday-Saturday 9:15am to 6:15pm

Remote work schedule opportunities may be considered after successful completion of probation, at the discretion of management and with the approval of the department head. Not all positions are eligible for remote work (telecommuting) per P&P 40-40.

Assist the public with the circulation of materials. Help meet the material needs of patrons through circulation: charging, discharging, and library card registration. Provide technology assistance, quick reference assistance by using our Integrated Library System or the Online Public Access Computers. Assist patrons with the Self-Checkout Machines, copiers, our website, databases, and occasionally the Automated Handling System. Provide support to understaffed Library locations and completing special projects. Assist with Library programs both inside and outside the library. Resolve any questions patrons may have regarding their account, accept fines and fees by using the cash register or card reader. Prepare and take bank deposits. Train and assign volunteers. Other duties include emptying book drops, shelving, sorting, answering phones, shipping, and routing materials to other locations. This position is also expected to assist with bus pass sales, voter registration, passport applications, and other revenue generating opportunities. Receive office supplies. Establish and maintain effective relations with coworkers, the public, and vendors. Treat everyone with honesty, respect, and fairness. Assist in APL’s diversity and inclusiveness efforts. Ensure excellent customer service and a positive user experience while being an efficient member of the team. Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patrons with Self-Checkout, copiers, website, databases, and occasional Automated Handling System tasks.
  • Support understaffed library locations and complete special projects; assist with library programs inside and outside the library.
  • Resolve patron questions about accounts; collect fines and fees at cash register or card reader.
  • Prepare and take bank deposits; train and assign volunteers.
  • Manage auxiliary duties such as emptying book drops, shelving, sorting, answering phones, shipping, and routing materials.
  • Assist with bus pass sales, voter registration, passport applications, and other revenue-generating opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain effective relations with coworkers, the public, and vendors; support diversity and inclusiveness efforts.

Qualifications

  • High school, GED, or the equivalent
  • One (1) year of customer service and/or library experience
  • Passport Acceptance Agent Certification within six (6) months of hire

Employment and Background Requirements

  • Employment is conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation.
  • The Municipality participates in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security E-Verify Program.
  • Background checks include criminal history, verification of education, and dates of employment; fingerprinting may be required with associated fees.
  • All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Additional Preferences

  • Preference will be given to Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA) employees; successful AMEA candidates may be forwarded to the department before non-AMEA applicants.
