Overview

The Writing Center at Utah Valley University is hiring peer writing tutors to work with learners in one-on-one and group sessions and support learners at any stage of the writing process. Tutors lead sessions online and in person and provide video feedback for learners from various backgrounds and experiences. In addition, tutors participate in creating writing resources, facilitating workshops, staffing events, and other duties as assigned. Additionally, tutors participate in ongoing professional development and tutor certification. The Writing Center serves a wide range of writers, so applicants from every major and student with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Summary Of Responsibilities

  • Facilitate in-person and online writing consultations to support writers working on general and disciplinary writing assignments.
  • Collaboratively develop resources to support writers and writing instruction across campus.
  • Develop and lead workshops and assist with writing and learning-centered events on campus.
  • Participate in weekly professional development and certification.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

  • Must be a current student of UVU
  • Able to attend weekly training and work a minimum of 10 hours a week, including possible evening and weekend shifts
  • Must have completed ONE of the following courses with a grade of A or B: ENGL 1005, ENGL 1010, ENGL 2010, or an equivalent course from another institution

  • Highly reliable, with strong time and task-management skills, contributing to the smooth daily operations of the Center.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear, concise, and friendly manner.
  • Willingness to continually develop and collaborate as part of a learning community.
  • Ability to maintain professional relationships with staff, faculty, and students, including maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of learners and diverse student population.
  • Familiarity with standard word processing programs, including Word and Google Docs.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
