The Position This role is posted on a continuous basis, with review starting the first week of each month. Panel interviews will conclude by late December or January; final communications will occur by the end of 2025 or early 2026.

Opportunity Entry‑level Communications Dispatchers are needed for the Public Safety Headquarters in Castro Valley. The position is a one‑year hiring pool used to fill the current and future openings.

What You’ll Be Doing as a Communications Dispatcher Under supervision, perform dispatch and routine law‑enforcement functions in a non‑sworn capacity, including:

Receive and triage emergency and non‑emergency calls.

Transmit radio and telephone communications.

Analyze situations and dispatch appropriate units.

Request ambulance, towing, or other emergency services.

Monitor partner agency frequencies and rebroadcast information.

Operate and adjust radio‑telephone equipment.

Provide communications support during major incidents.

Assist in emergency evacuation of the communications center.

Participate in mandatory off‑site training.

Perform clerical duties: typing, record entry, report generation, and customer inquiries.

Process incident reports for police, fire, and medical units.

Collect fees for towing, permits, and other services if required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.

Experience: Minimum two years of recent, responsible work experience.

License: Valid California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.

Typing: 40 net words per minute.

Computer: Ability to operate telephone, radio, and computer keyboard equipment.

English: Clear spoken and written English.

Multitasking and problem‑solving skills suitable for emergency situations.

Physical capability: Adequate vision, hearing, and manual dexterity.

Knowledge of:

Police and fire dispatching methods.

Routine clerical operations.

Ability to:

Type at required speed.

Multi‑task and file accurately.

Memorize and retain information quickly.

Speak English clearly.

Use critical reasoning and decision making.

Build cooperative relationships with staff, partners, and the public.

Adapt to changing situations.

Follow written instructions and policies.

Read paper and digital maps, provide verbal directions.

Conditions of Employment

Work all shifts (day, swing, graveyard, weekends, holidays) on a rotational basis.

Must pass Level 3 background screening.

Provide prescribed uniform.

Maintain current First Aid and CPR certificates.
