Medical Assistant (Dermatology) - Newport News, VA

Overview: We are seeking a Medical Assistant to join our outpatient dermatology clinic in Newport News, VA. The candidate will assist physicians and other providers by preparing procedure trays, ensuring adequate supplies, and providing patient care. Responsibilities

  • Assist providers with dermatology procedures and patient care.
  • Prepare and organize procedure trays, instruments, and equipment per provider instructions.
  • Obtain and document vital signs and patient intake information.
  • Manage patient flow and coordinate with the front desk for scheduling.
  • Set up pathology specimens and route them to the correct laboratory.
  • Respond to patient questions via phone or in‑office, and document all interactions in the EMR.
  • Review and follow clinical task lists and nurse line messages.
  • Calibrate, clean, sterilize, and inventory all equipment and instruments.
  • Maintain medication supplies, discard out‑of‑date items, and keep accurate inventory records.
  • Adhere to infection control and OSHA/HIPAA guidelines.
  • Verify completeness of all phone messages, faxes, and inter‑departmental mail.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and perform any other duties assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • Experience measuring vital signs and preparing patients for appointments.
  • Experience administering injections.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, CPT, and ICD‑10 coding.
  • Familiarity with office financial policies and basic computer skills.
  • Proficiency in EMR systems and standard office equipment (computer, fax, copier, scanner).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; fluent in English.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, high‑stress environment and collaborate with staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Capability to travel to satellite offices as needed.

Licensure / Certifications / Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant Program, Certified Nursing Assistant program, or a bachelor’s degree in a pre‑med/physician assistant track (preferred). CPR certification preferred.
  • 1–2 years of recent experience as a Medical Assistant, CNA, or similar clinical role (preferred). Previous dermatology experience is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Moderate talking, bending, twisting, and balancing.
  • Use of hands and fingers for detailed tasks.
