Job Summary
The Communication Officer receives incoming calls for police and emergency assistance. The incumbent in this position is required to maintain radio contact with Police and Emergency personnel assigned to the university’s properties. This work requires the exercise of discretion, courtesy, and tact. General supervision is received from an administrative supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Maintain radio contact with Police and Emergency personnel assigned to the university’s properties.
- Exercise discretion, courtesy and tact while making calls.
- Make network distribution of traffic based on enforcement needs.
- Review incoming and outgoing criminal‑related law‑enforcement traffic, including disaster and crime alerts.
- Make notification of unusual events or incidents to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
- Monitor camera system.
- Maintain working knowledge of emergency management procedures as related to public safety and the operation of the National Advance Warning Alarm System.
- Report problems with network operations and performance.
- Adhere to procedures required by Mississippi Justice Information Center, Central Data Processing Authority, National Crime Information Center, and National Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems.
- Maintain necessary logs and files and prepare and/or submit daily reports.
- Receive classroom and on‑the‑job training on retrieval, analysis, and potential uses for enforcement data available through local, state, and national automated information systems such as MJIC, NCIC, NLETS and other law‑enforcement databases.
Qualifications
- High school diploma.
- Knowledge of computer or related skills.
- Must be 21 years old.
Licensing & Certifications
Incumbent must complete the certification requirements/minimum standards for tele‑communicators as set forth by the Board of Emergency Tele‑Communicators Standards and Training.
Physical/Work Requirements
- Work in noisy areas (above 85 decibels) – Yes.
- Sedentary work – occasional lifting of 10 pounds.
- Light work – occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.
- Extended work hours – occasional.

Posted Salary Range: $22,525
