Creating Academic, Social, and Ethical Leaders High School Library/Media Specialist Job Description The High School Library/Media Specialist is responsible for providing respectful, courteous, and knowledgeable support for all students, staff, and visitors. The Library/Media Specialist will oversee library and media resources, support student research and inquiry, promote independent learning, and collaborate with teachers to integrate information literacy and digital citizenship into classroom instruction. This position plays a vital role in fostering a culture of academic excellence, curiosity, and lifelong learning aligned with the mission and vision of Prospect Ridge Academy.
Library Instruction
Conduct organized and engaging instruction sessions focused on research, digital literacy, and information evaluation.
Collaborate with teachers to integrate library and media resources into course curricula across all content areas.
Design and implement lessons that support college and career readiness, including research writing, citation management, and source credibility.
Guide students in locating, analyzing, and synthesizing diverse sources using databases, print materials, and digital resources.
Promote critical thinking, independent inquiry, and ethical use of information.
Develop programs and initiatives to encourage reading for both academic and personal enrichment.
Support the use of technology and digital tools to enhance student learning.
Attend grade‑level meetings, PLCs, and professional development opportunities to align library programming with school goals.
Communication
Collaborate effectively with K–8 Library/Media Specialists to support instructional goals and library initiatives.
Collaborate with staff to ensure information literacy and research skills are embedded across high school courses.
Communicate effectively and consistently with students, families, and colleagues.
Build cooperative relationships with teachers to support curriculum development and instructional goals.
Foster a respectful and inclusive environment where all students feel valued and supported.
Guide students in developing strong academic and digital citizenship habits.
Model professional communication and problem‑solving strategies.
Library Operations
Maintain an organized, functional, and welcoming high school library environment conducive to learning and collaboration.
Manage the circulation of books, Chromebooks, and other media materials.
Oversee cataloging, processing, and repair of library resources.
Supervise student use of library space and technology responsibly, including hands‑on facilitation and management of student aides, coordinating with teachers to manage makeup assessments, and managing tutor time.
Curate a balanced, diverse collection that supports high school coursework and independent reading interests.
Design and facilitate library programs such as author visits, research fairs, and reading challenges.
Manage the library budget and work collaboratively with finance to ensure appropriate resource allocation.
Utilize data to inform decisions on collection development, student usage, and programming impact.
Other Responsibilities
Adhere to approved communication pathways and maintain professionalism in all interactions.
Actively pursue professional development to stay current on library science practices and emerging technologies.
Participate in and contribute to programs and activities that enhance the PRA community beyond instructional hours.
Support and uphold PRA’s mission, vision, and core values.
Follow policies established by the Prospect Ridge Academy Board of Directors, Adams 12 School District, and Colorado State‑mandated school guidelines, except where PRA has received waivers.
K‑12 Responsibilities
Sponsoring a Club or Coaching a Team (both may include a stipend).
Serving on Committees or Task Forces (minimum once a month).
Your involvement enhances our community and supports our mission, making it vital to our collective success.
Education And Related Work Experience
B.A. or B.S. with an emphasis in Library Science, Education, or a related field required; MLS or MLIS preferred.
Must hold or be eligible for a valid Colorado teaching license.
Completion of an approved program in library science, media science, or a related area from a regionally accredited institution, including a supervised practicum or internship covering both elementary and secondary library experience, is required for the Colorado Teacher Librarian endorsement.
Programs completed outside of Colorado will be evaluated against state standards. The PRAXIS 5312 may be required to demonstrate content knowledge and competency.
Note: The former School Librarian endorsement was discontinued in 2016 and may only be renewed on a professional license if enrolled in an approved program by Fall 2016. Future renewals will remain under the previously held endorsement title if all renewal requirements are met.
Must meet state certification requirements within the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
Demonstrated experience in teaching or supporting students in grades 9–12.
Strong knowledge of digital literacy, research methodologies, and emerging educational technologies.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Commitment to PRA’s Mission, Vision, and Character Education initiatives.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic school environment.

Manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced educational environment.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Vision abilities required include close vision, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
Provide backup assistance and coverage for other areas as needed.
Work hours may occasionally be extended.
