Job Description
The University of Florida School of Music invites applications for a full‑time, 9‑month, tenure‑accruing faculty position in Composition. The successful candidate will contribute to both music theory and composition programs, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising honors projects and theses, and maintaining an active national and international creative research profile.
Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses including the undergraduate music theory sequence, composition skills, advanced theory and analysis, graduate seminars, and individual composition lessons.
- Supervise undergraduate honor projects and graduate theses.
- Maintain an active national and international creative research profile in areas of specialization consistent with tenure and promotion expectations.
- Participate fully in shared governance and service to the School of Music, College of the Arts, and the University of Florida.
- Participate in School of Music community activities such as colloquia, guest‑scholar residencies, exam administration, recruiting, and admissions.
Required Qualifications
- Terminal degree in music composition or closely related field; ABD candidates who will obtain their degree before appointment will be considered.
- Record of success teaching core undergraduate written music theory.
- Record of and/or potential for achievement at a national or international level aligned with tenure and promotion criteria.
- Evidence of successful collaboration and collegiality with faculty, students, and staff.
- Evidence of skill in designing and facilitating academic work that promotes curiosity, respect, open discourse, and inclusivity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching experience of two or more years beyond graduate assistantship at the college/university level.
- Commitment to innovative, cross‑disciplinary curricula.
- Secondary specialization in a related field such as performance, music technology, or another area.
- Commitment to positive change through creativity, including engagement with technology and exploration of the relations between sound and the social world.
- Ability to teach theory courses incorporating popular music, jazz, or non‑Western traditions.
