This position is advertised from the minimum to the mid-point hourly rate. Salary will be determined on education and experience at the time of offer.

NATURE OF WORK: Under close supervision, performs technical work of moderate difficulty in public safety communications; this position has department-specific responsibility.

Operates fixed base communications equipment, including computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system, 911 system, telephones, multi-channel radio, TDD (text telephone device for hearing/speech impaired), numerous computer databases and maps; answers incoming emergency and non-emergency calls; interviews callers and gathers details; prioritizes calls for service and determines appropriate personnel to respond; calms and counsels distraught and irate callers in emergency situations; dispatches emergency responders and relays pertinent information to law enforcement personnel in a factual and concise manner; monitors radio channels and provides immediate assistance; maintains status and awareness of Sheriff’s patrol units and monitors alarms; tracks the location and activities of all officers on duty; logs messages transmitted and received; enters all emergency assistance calls into the CAD incident logs; inputs and updates information into NCIC computer systems; retrieves information from automated files for database checks; composes, sends, and receives messages via criminal justice computer systems; operates and maintains telephone recording systems; follows departmental policies and procedures; notifies other agencies and administration on critical incidents; reads and interprets maps to assist in locating geographical areas; performs clerical tasks; maintains security and confidentiality of sensitive information; and performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements include a High School Diploma or GED, six months of customer service or clerical experience, or an equivalent combination; preferred keying skill of at least 40 wpm; and certification in ACJIS and NCIC within six months of appointment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: This role may require passing a background check, polygraph, and drug test; valid driver’s license; and ability to work all shifts, including holidays and weekends.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

County policies, Sheriff’s policies, laws governing dispatch, communication equipment, local geography, and business English.

Skills in:

Prioritizing information, multitasking under pressure, clear communication, map reading, operating communication equipment, and record keeping.

Ability to:

Enter data accurately and quickly, retain information, work under stress, maintain confidentiality, exercise judgment, work independently, establish effective relationships, follow instructions, and communicate effectively.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is performed in a fast-paced, high-volume call center environment; requires shift work including nights, holidays, and weekends; involves prolonged sitting, occasional physical activity, and operation of various communication and computer equipment; may require travel for training or meetings. Random drug testing may be conducted.
