About Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of 4‑year‑old Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who was fighting cancer and wanted to raise money to find cures for all children with cancer. Her spirit and determination inspired others to support her cause, and when she passed away at the age of 8, she had raised $1 million. Since then, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement. Today, ALSF is one of the leading funders of pediatric cancer research in the U.S. and Canada, raising more than $300 million so far, funding over 1 500 research projects and providing programs to families affected by childhood cancer. Description

This is an exciting new role that will bring publishing experience to our Family Services department which provides resources and connects research with families of children battling cancer. As a member of the Family Services team, the Publishing Coordinator will serve as the only embedded publishing expert, bringing a wealth of opportunity to increase our profile as the “go-to” childhood cancer organization.

This role will work with experts in the childhood cancer field to deliver educational resources directly to families who are dealing with a childhood cancer diagnosis. This position requires a skilled project manager with experience in publishing, who has the ability also to understand the intricate experiences of a family diagnosed with childhood cancer.

Areas of Responsibility

Childhood Cancer Guides

The Childhood Cancer Guides is a series of books for families with a child diagnosed with cancer. Our books are reviewed by renowned experts in pediatric oncology and feature stories from more than 500 parents, children, and survivors of childhood cancer.

This role will work closely with all contributors—including families, authors, designers, printers, distributors, and experts in the field—to update, distribute, and evaluate the 5 Childhood Cancer Guides. The Publishing Coordinator will lead these books through the various stages of production and work with the team to market them. They will also ensure the content is available and integrated into the ALSF website and that the guides are high quality and free from inconsistencies.

Specific responsibilities for the Guides include:

  • Planning, tracking, and driving all stages of production. Overseeing the books as they go through updating, copyediting, layout and design, electronic production, printing, and promotion.
  • Leading the teams of writers, copy editors, designers, printers, and field experts for each book.
  • Working with authors and freelance writers to plan, organize, and present written material and graphics in the best possible manner. Create timelines for each book.
  • Reading and reviewing manuscripts. Editing manuscripts for style, punctuation, and consistency.
  • Managing contracts and permissions for each book. As a book nears completion, obtain written permission from authors and/or publishers to use direct quotes from their books.
  • Understanding sales records, buying patterns among schools, libraries, and bookstores, and other marketing trends.
  • Gathering feedback from the intended audiences to further enhance the books in future editions.
  • Managing the editorial budget for the production, advertising, and promotion of each book.
  • Managing the relationship with the book distributor and providing reports to accounting and sales/download updates to management.
  • Implementing marketing ideas to expand the reach of the books.

Website

This role will also work with the website team to ensure that all content from the guides is available on the website, updated, and easily searchable.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Creating reports on frequently visited pages and using analytics to drive decision making for additional website content production, such as video.
  • Guiding the creation of a digital library of content on the website to complement the written content.

Other Resource Materials

This role will also work with the Family Services team to advise on new and existing educational materials such as guides, toolkits, etc. for families, providing input, writing assistance, and expertise as needed.

Skills

  • 5 years full‑time professional experience with a minimum of 3 years publishing experience, including all parts of chapter‑book publishing from working with authors to printing and marketing the final product.
  • Strong project management approach to the book publishing process, which has many moving parts.
  • Managing timelines—create realistic and achievable timelines to produce quality deliverables on or before deadlines.
  • Writing—ensure that all written content has correct grammar, punctuation, and syntax. Editors must write clearly and logically while considering the viewpoint of their audience.
  • Relationship building—cultivate and maintain good working relationships with authors and staff. This is important for tactfully guiding the author through development and coordinating with others to produce the book on time.
  • Utilizing sound judgement to determine if the manuscript is ethical and free from plagiarism. Research and recommend types of educational resources and content appropriate for the Foundation to provide to families.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make significant contributions to our continued growth and, more importantly, to changing the lives of children with cancer. This full‑time opportunity offers a competitive salary and benefits package.
