Overview The California Post is seeking a General Assignment Sports Reporter to cover anything and everything in the world of sports across California and beyond. From breaking news around teams, leagues, and athletes to viral cultural moments, this reporter will ensure the Post has the crucial angles covered while also working to break our own stories. This role is pivotal in keeping readers informed, engaged, and up to date on the fast-moving world of sports — all in the Post’s signature, snappy voice. The New York Post is heading West with a brand-new newsroom in Los Angeles and a strong investment in The California Post.
This is a unique opportunity to bring The New York Post’s DNA of powerful, agenda-setting journalism to the West Coast and be a fresh and fearless voice for common sense. The California Post Sports department will deliver muscular coverage of the biggest teams in town, from the locker room to the front office, with additional coverage from the Tech team highlighting innovators shaping the future. Los Angeles is a great city, and The California Post aims to be a bold, new voice here.
Pay Range: $65,000 - $75,000
Base pay range $65,000.00/yr - $75,000.00/yr
Note: The New York Post is building a hybrid work model. This role will be expected to report into the office 4 days per week (subject to change depending on business needs).
Responsibilities Play a major role in daily coverage of varied topics and teams, including breaking news, game coverage, features, and analysis
Build and maintain strong sources inside teams, leagues, and the broader sports community
File timely stories with accuracy, flair, and authority that reflect The Post’s voice
Pitch and deliver viral or buzzworthy stories that go beyond game results to highlight personalities, culture, and storylines fans are talking about
File real-time updates during games, breaking news, and live events
Collaborate with editors and colleagues to deliver innovative, engaging coverage across platforms
Report sports stories that will attract new readers and expand The Post’s digital presence
Write unique stories in a timely fashion to keep readers informed and entertained
Cover the Rams on Sundays, the Lakers on Tuesdays, the Dodgers on Wednesdays, and work the rewrite desk on Thursdays
Use social media and digital tools for news gathering and discovery
Work cooperatively as a team member under tight deadlines
Requirements 1-2+ years of experience in an online news environment
Ability to leverage multimedia content to enhance stories and user experience
Strong journalism skills and understanding of what to promote and what constitutes breaking news
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines
Familiarity with content management systems, photo editing software, SEO, and web analytics is a plus
Willingness to work overtime, weekday nights, and weekends
A strong social media presence or following is preferred
On-camera experience is strongly preferred; reporters should be comfortable presenting stories on video, podcasts, and other formats to extend journalism across digital and social platforms
