Job Overview We are adding several Mid-level Mechanical Designers to our Kiewit Industrial Engineering team. Designers will utilize SmartPlant, REVIT, or similar tools to create 3D equipment models, mechanical layouts, and piping systems for a diverse portfolio that includes Data Centers, Water/Wastewater treatment, and Campus/Utilities/Industrial Energy projects across North America.
Responsibilities
Utilize SmartPlant 3D (or other 3D design software) to create 3D equipment models based on equipment drawings.
Design mechanical systems, equipment, and piping; generate isometric drawings for systems typical for industrial energy, datacenters, bulk solids material handling, and other industrial facilities, including chilled water systems, heat exchangers for water circulation, cooling distribution units (CDU), Computer Room Air Handling Units (CRAH), fan walls, containment walls for air cooling, process steam, process water, drains, and general plant/facility water, compressed air, and gas systems.
Design material‑handling systems and generate isometric and detail drawings for systems typical for pulp and paper, bulk solids material handling, and other industrial facilities, including pneumatic conveying, chute work, and ductwork.
Perform early project design work related to facility layout and equipment general arrangement.
Develop and check design deliverables in accordance with industry codes and standards, contract requirements, and company standards.
Develop the capability to navigate 3D models and check for interferences and constructability.
Support the construction team, including representing the design team on‑site, answering RFIs, and providing creative design solutions.
Coordinate with other design partners—including construction partners, equipment suppliers, and other engineers and designers assigned to the project—to review work progress and results.
Develop schedules, work assignments, and staffing requirements to ensure successful project completion.
Qualifications3>
Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Computer Aided Design and Drafting Technology or related field (4 years mechanical design experience) OR high school/GED diploma with 8 years mechanical design experience.
Experience with 3D design software such as SmartPlant3D, AutoCAD, Microstation, or REVIT; preference for SmartPlant3D and REVIT.
Minimum of 4 years of industry‑related design experience preparing 3D models and design documents for mechanical and piping systems.
Knowledge of piping support design, pipe‑stress analysis, equipment design/layout, and system installation.
Knowledge of piping design standards, specifications, and procedures.
Experience in mechanical design for Data Centers, chilled water, CRAH, and CDU systems highly desired.
Experience drafting P&IDs, schematics, drawings, conceptual locations, equipment modeling/layout in 3D, and routing pipe in 3D software.
Strong communication skills, team orientation, attention to detail, and strong problem‑solving abilities.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams).
Other Requirements
Regular, reliable attendance.
Work productively and meet deadlines.
Communicate and interact effectively with supervisors, employees, and others.
Perform work safely and effectively, following oral and written instructions, warning signs, equipment use, and policies.
Work during normal operating hours to complete work within deadlines; overtime and weekends as required.
Compensation Base Compensation: $73,000 – $115,000 per year (actual compensation varies by education, experience, skillset, and/or location).
