Job Summary
The Communication Officer receives incoming calls for police and emergency assistance. The incumbent in this position is required to maintain radio contact with Police and Emergency personnel assigned to the university's properties. This work requires the exercise of discretion, courtesy and tact. Firmness, sound intelligent decision making skills, and knowledge of public safety procedures. General supervision is received from an administrative supervisor.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the duties performed by a Communication Officer
Basic computer skills
Ability to communicate effectively
Essential Job Functions
The Communication Officer must have a working knowledge of the Federal Communications Commission Rules and Regulations as well as the Alcorn State University Police Department General Order.
Receives classroom and on-the-job training on the retrieval, analysis, and potential uses for enforcement data available through such local, state, and national automated information systems such as MJIC , NCIC , NLETS and other Law Enforcement Data Bases.
Make network distribution of traffic based on enforcement needs.
Review incoming and outgoing criminal-related law enforcement traffic, including disaster and crime alerts.
Make notification of unusual events or incidents to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
Monitor camera system.
Might be required to maintain a working knowledge of emergency management procedures as related to public safety and the operation of The National Advance Warning Alarm System.
Report problems in network operations and performance.
Adhere to defined procedures as required by the Mississippi Justice Information Center, Central Data Processing Authority, National Crime Information Center, and National Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems.
Maintain necessary logs and files.
Prepares and/or submits daily reports.
Qualifications
Must have a high school diploma
Must have knowledge of computer or some related skills
Must be 21 years old
Licensing and Certifications
Incumbent in this position must complete the certification requirements/minimum standards for tele-communicators as set forth by the Board of Emergency Tele-communicators Standards and Training.
Physical Requirements
Work in noisy (above 85 decibels) areas
Sedentary Work - Exerting 10 pounds occasionally
Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds
Very Heavy Work - Exerting in excess of 100 pounds
Travel
Extended Work Hours occasionally
