Position Title
Library Assistant
Reports to: Library Manager
Pay: $9.00/hr
Schedule: Part-time: 19.5 hrs/wk (may include Saturdays)
FSLA Status: Non-exempt
Work Location: Ida Hilton Public Library, 1105 North Way, Darien, GA 31305
Responsibilities
- Patron Services: Provides services to patrons by checking materials in and out, collecting fines, answering directional and reference questions, copying materials, placing holds on items, issuing new and replacement cards, explaining and upholding library policies and procedures, explaining and teaching about the library’s computers, and responding to telephone inquiries.
- Collects payment for lost or damaged materials and overdue fines.
- Assists patrons with utilizing online reference sources and databases.
- Provides assistance and education for requesting items from other libraries in the PINES system and contacting patrons when items come in.
- Provides reference assistance as requested; assists patrons with locating materials, both in the library’s collection and online resources through the Three Rivers Website.
- Collection Management: Sorts and shelves materials; cleans and examines shelves to ensure books are in the proper order. Searches for missing items in the library. Retrieves items from the book drop throughout the day and checks them in. Mends worn and/or torn materials.
- Program Development and Implementation: Plans and conducts programs with other employees. Promotes all library programs and resources to the patrons and community. Prepares holiday and seasonal displays. May be called to do outreach events.
- Administrative Tasks: Performs technical service duties such as entering data into the computer, processing items, replacing barcodes, conducting inventory, assisting and instructing the public in the use of public computers and giving basic Internet instruction. Explains the policies and procedures for the use of the community room to interested patrons, while completing the proper paperwork and scheduling procedures for the room. May open and close the library, help and/or oversee an after‑hours event, as well as work on Saturdays. Performs general clerical duties such as typing, filing, and faxing. Attends all staff meetings and regional training. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education/Certification: High School Diploma or equivalent. Preferred: some college education.
- Experience: One (1) year of experience working with the public in a customer service role.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Comfortable in use of technology for business purposes. Ability to adapt to multiple demands and changing priorities, to learn, and be willing to embrace change. Proficient in verbal and written communication. Intuitive ability to listen carefully and openly. Capacity to interact in a positive, effective manner with all team members and the general public.
Work Environment
The work is typically performed in a library setting.
Physical Demands
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 35 pounds.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach.
- Manual dexterity to operate computer equipment and other office machinery.
