UX/UI Engineer
Location:
Remote, with weekly on-site client meetings in the DC Metro area
Security Clearance:
Active U.S. security clearance (Secret or above)
Position Overview We are seeking a UX/UI Engineer that will help drive the design, research, and execution efforts in our subsidiary, Hana Defense Solutions (HDS) under the Native Hawaiian nonprofit corporation, The Hana Group. From strategic vision to tactical implementation, we deliver adaptable, mission-centered, solutions that help government and defense clients achieve lasting impact. Our team supports the mission-critical efforts of the Department of War (DoW) and federal clients utilizing human-centered design, technology and co-development. As a UX/UI Engineer, you must have passion and motivation for solving wicked problems that the DoW faces by getting to the root cause. This individual will work be utilizing and combining creativity with technical expertise that meets the needs of the warfighter. Your key roles will be driving the work through research, design, and product delivery in a collaborative environment.
Position Description & Core Responsibilities
Develop deliverables that meet DoW standards and security requirements
Conduct user research, usability testing, and iterative design reviews to ensure solutions meet real-world operational needs
Design, develop, and maintain design concepts, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs
Collaborate with stakeholders to capture requirements and translate them into functional, user-centered designs.
Lead human-centered design strategy across programs, integrating research, systems design, and user experience frameworks
Translate user feedback into easily digestible visuals including roadmaps, journey maps, and service blueprints
Create and maintain design systems, style guides, and design standards
Stay current and informed on industry trends, technologies, and design tools
Work closely with software development teams to ensure design integrity and feasibility
Work within technical and security constraints to deliver secure and effective user experiences
Participate in design reviews and provide constructive feedback to colleagues
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Anthropology, Computer Science, or other related field (Master’s preferred)
5+ years experience working with DoW, federal clients or other mission-critical organizations
Background in operational design, human-centered design, and user research
Experience in Wargames, tabletop exercises, and modeling
Strong portfolio that demonstrates expertise in UX/UI engineering
Proficiency in design tools such as Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud
Excellent communication, collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Experience aligning design strategies with complex organizational, policy, or mission-style objectives
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of front-end development technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
Demonstrated success in scaling design systems or experience frameworks across organizations
SharePoint backend knowledge
Familiarity with accessibility guidelines/regulations and style guides
Basic understanding on contract management, billing and product management
Experience with Agile development teams
