University of Texas at Austin – Texas Student Media (TSM)
Position Overview The Drag is the professionally-led, student‑powered audio production house of Texas Student Media at the University of Texas at Austin. The Managing Director will spearhead the short‑ and long‑term strategic direction of The Drag, overseeing marketing, fundraising, revenue generation, audio content strategy, event planning, client partnerships, and student supervision. The role also includes an advisory support position for 91.7 KVRX Radio, TSM’s FCC‑licensed, student‑run radio station.
Responsibilities
Manage day‑to‑day operations, working with student staff and the executive producer to manage audio projects, approve new projects, own client relationships, and ensure smooth operations.
Provide creative input and advisory support for ongoing podcasts, guide their formation, and collaborate with student groups on journalistic reporting, editing, producing, and sound design.
Direct fundraising and revenue strategy, including selling and managing podcast advertising, securing donors, running campaigns, and creating fundraising events.
Oversee marketing efforts for The Drag and its podcasts, partnering with the student marketing team to develop PR campaigns, social media, website content, newsletters, and outreach channels.
Reach out to news organizations, podcasters, and similar entities to forge collaborative partnerships.
Support TSM Broadcast Adviser and KVRX Radio students as needed, including technical help, production assistance, meeting oversight, and additional assigned tasks.
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three years of experience in audio production. Demonstrated ability to manage content teams in a journalistic setting, guide projects from conception to completion, and possess expertise in marketing—especially social media strategy. Experience creating and managing events, fundraising, revenue generation, and teaching practical journalistic skills to others. Passion for podcasting and a solid understanding of the industry. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree in Communications or a related field and at least five years of experience in the media industry. Prior experience with contracts, creative project bidding, budget management, and rapid acquisition of audio editing and production skills. Proven background working with college students of diverse educational backgrounds.
Salary Range $60,000
Working Conditions
