Responsibilities

Ensure delivery of child life services through assessment and intervention, creating a safe therapeutic environment.

Provide procedural preparation and post‑procedural support with developmentally appropriate explanations.

Offer nonpharmacological pain management techniques such as deep breathing and imagery.

Use therapeutic interventions to help patients explore medical experiences and gain mastery.

Facilitate and teach coping techniques, creating individualized coping plans.

Assess developmental, emotional, and medical needs for therapeutic play interventions.

Provide developmentally appropriate education to increase patient understanding of diagnoses and treatment plans.

Implement special event programming for the unit population.

Work with the multidisciplinary team to address psychosocial needs.

Provide bereavement support with memory‑making activities.

Organize age‑appropriate resources for the multidisciplinary team.

Communicate vital patient and family information to the child life team.

Collaborate with the child life team to enhance programming.

Maintain professional communication with multidisciplinary members.

Provide updates and educational in‑services to the department.

Participate in committees to enhance patient care and unit operations.

Develop teaching materials related to child life interventions.

Create preparation resources and coping tools for procedures.

Develop and maintain relationships with community organizations and donors.

Complete timely documentation of services provided.

Provide specialized knowledge of child life to team members.

Participate in professional organizations and long‑term planning.

Supervise child life students, staff, volunteers, and support personnel.

Develop teaching and training materials for the child life program curriculum.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a social or behavioral science or related health specialty (accredited).

OR Master’s degree in a related field.

One year of progressively responsible full‑time experience in social services or a medical/clinical setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) credential from the Association of Child Life Professionals.

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Child Life, Human Development, Child Development, or related field.

Previous experience with children’s services.

Previous leadership experience.
