Description JOB SUMMARY:
The Sports Communications Specialist supports the Sports Information Office in promoting Gustavus Athletics through creative content, digital media, and communications. This position plays a key role in maintaining a dynamic presence across social media and the athletics website by producing engaging visuals, posts, and multimedia content. The Specialist assists with coverage of varsity and club sports, helping to compile statistics, manage game operations, and support the department's storytelling efforts.
Employment Type: Full‑time (.88 FTE), Exempt (Salaried) — Benefits‑Eligible
Salary Range: $40,000‑$45,000
Main Responsibilities
Serve as a main contact for media inquiries, providing information on varsity and club sports and student‑athletes.
Assist in the creation and scheduling of content for Gustavus Athletics' social media platforms in collaboration with the Sports Information Director (SID).
Design graphics, edit photos and videos, and contribute to written content such as game recaps and feature stories.
Support live game operations including setup, statistics entry, broadcasting, and media table assistance.
Help maintain accurate team rosters, schedules, and results on the athletics website.
Contribute to the collection and organization of athletics records, statistics, and digital archives.
Provide basic media relations support, responding to information requests and coordinating with campus communications as needed.
Assist in promoting club sports in coordination with the Club Sports Director.
Supervise student staff and volunteers during home events as assigned.
Perform additional duties in support of the Sports Information Office, as directed.
Travel to select away athletic events as necessary.
Prerequisites Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field
Proficiency with social media platforms and content creation tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar)
Experience managing social media accounts for an organization or program
Demonstrated knowledge of social media trends and best practices
Working knowledge of website content management systems (e.g., SIDEARM Sports)
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Team‑oriented approach with strong attention to detail and organization.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed for event coverage
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in statistical compilation through NCAA Live Stats
Familiarity with college athletics, the MIAC, and/or NCAA Division III
