Position Overview

The Designer II is a key role responsible for designing and producing construction plan sets. This includes establishing design criteria, performing engineering calculations, and applying knowledge of design concepts, regulations, hydrologic and hydraulic methodologies, modeling software, CAD tools, GIS applications, surveying principles, and construction techniques. The Designer II serves as a mentor to others in design development and in preparing technical project specifications. Success is characterized by delivering high-quality work with increasing independence, reducing revisions, and contributing as a pivotal team member to ensure timely project completion and approvals.

Key Responsibilities

Continuously improve understanding beyond that of a Designer I through ongoing learning.

Communicate effectively with the project team and respond promptly to plan reviewers, initiating follow-up as needed.

Research and navigate design regulations, development ordinances, and jurisdictional requirements for new sites.

Perform hydrologic calculations using methods such as SCS Curve Number and Rational Method for water resource projects.

Calculate hydraulics for storm conveyance design using software like StormCAD or PCSWMM, including storm sewer piping, open channels, culverts, and inlet flow calculations.

Design spillways, detention facilities, and hydrograph routing systems with approved software like HEC-HMS or PondPack.

Conduct flood studies using HEC-RAS in compliance with FEMA or local standards.

Apply knowledge of riverine floodplain and floodway concepts as needed.

Prepare grading, hydrology data, and construction drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Generate engineering calculation reports and use ArcGIS Pro for hydrology calculations and visualizations.

Design erosion control devices and develop plans according to local and state standards.

Design stormwater control measures adhering to local and state standards.

Develop a comprehensive understanding of stormwater design impacts on site components.

Calculate Earthworks and adjust grading accordingly.

Perform fieldwork for data collection and as-built certifications.

Skills & Experience

2 to 5 years of experience in water resources or civil engineering.

Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS Pro, and H&H modeling software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, or PCSWMM.

Excellent communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

EI certification or on path to PE license preferred.

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field from an accredited program.
