Responsibilities
An employee in this position performs responsible paraprofessional work in the acquisition, preparation and organization of library materials, providing customer service to patrons and assisting patrons with library services and answering questions. Duties include cataloging, operating the Bookmobile, and providing coverage at circulation desk.
- Provides information regarding library programs and services.
- Explains library policies to new and current customers and ensures compliance with established policies.
- Registers customers and issues library cards; collects overdue fines.
- Assists customers with use of public computers and library equipment.
- Assists customers with the checking in and out of books and other materials; places items on hold for customers.
- Organizes books and materials for return to shelves.
- Operates and drives the mobile library to assigned route.
- Makes sure the mobile library book collection is maintained and the bookmobile is kept clean.
- Plans and delivers programs to various facilities to include story time, book discussion groups, and seasonal reading programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Opens, operates and closes the cash register at the end of the day.
- Prepares materials for checking in and out.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree and experience providing services to the public including some general office, clerical, or accounting work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have valid Driver’s License.

- High-deductible health plan with a $3,300 deductible (Single). Employee-only coverage is funded by the County; County contributes $1,200 to the Health Savings Account annually.
- Dental plan provides preventive services, such as cleanings each year, at 100%. $25 deductible for other services. Basic services pay at 80% and other major services at 50%. County contributes $14.47 per month for employee coverage.
- Voluntary plans: AFLAC Accident, Critical Illness and Hospital Indemnity plans; MetLife Group Cancer; MassMutual Whole Life; and Superior Vision plans; Short-term and Long-term disability.
- Basic Life insurance for employees $10,000. Additional voluntary term life insurance available.
- Retirement: Pension through N.C. Local Government Employees' Retirement System; employees contribute 6% of gross wages; County contributes 14.40% (law enforcement 16.08%). 401(k) and 457 supplemental plans administered by Empower.
- Longevity pay for employees with at least 5 years of continuous service.
