Maritime/Waterfront Infrastructure BIM/CAD Design Practice Lead
We will count on you to:
Lead a team of junior to senior level BIM/CAD designers supporting our Maritime Market Sector (MMS) and Waterfront Infrastructure Business Class (WIBC), collaborating with project management and engineering staff to manage workload, assign priorities, develop deliverables on schedule and budget, and promote HDR interaction and technical advancement, while recognizing strong performance, providing mentorship, managing resources and succession plans, seeking cross‑business opportunities, and overseeing overall production quality.
Manage your team to support MMS and WIBC initiatives across our Maritime Program nationally and internationally, developing CAD/BIM products including 3D digital models, construction contract drawings, as‑built record documents, reporting and planning figures, graphics, and GIS‑related geo‑referenced database interface models.
Perform as a master of your craft with self‑direction in developing the above products with minimal direction from the Engineer or other technical professionals, demonstrating strong knowledge in construction plan content, sequencing, scale, layout, presentation, detailing standards, and code‑standard detailing requirements.
Provide support in developing earthwork, dredging, and construction material take‑offs based on your accurately drawn, proportioned, and scaled 3D models.
Be responsible for assimilating and managing a comprehensive project model comprising multi‑disciplinary elements, serve as the lead in generating the necessary BIM elements per the Level of Development (LOD) outlined in the Digital Delivery Plan (DDP) and project scope.
Create and maintain the comprehensive project model, systems, content, and overall digital delivery output, ensuring all elements conform to a project‑wide standard/convention for layering, annotation, presentation, referencing, indexing, naming, abbreviation, and numbering.
Command proficiency with required design software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, Revit, etc.); pursue self‑learning or company‑sponsored training to maintain mastery.
Have mastered structural design and detailing disciplines and exhibit sound fundamental knowledge of other project disciplines and their interactions.
Have an advanced understanding of architectural/engineering documentation and plan presentation across all disciplines.
Mentor and develop junior CAD/BIM specialists within the Maritime program and other interacting disciplines.
Exhibit expertise and command in performing activities necessary to meet expectations, including:
Accurately model BIM elements in the correct constraints of the modeling environment.
Prepare detailed drawings, layouts, and diagrams within project scope, schedule, and budget.
Maintain the discipline model including project information, coordinates, scales, orientations, scope boundaries, match‑lines, views, and sheets.
Produce discipline‑specific documentation with accurate annotations.
Monitor, improve, and maintain company standards and model health.
Coordinate the design with other discipline models through Design Reviews and 3D Coordination processes.
Execute all Digital Delivery requirements identified on the project.
Contribute to the overall development, modernization, and improvement of the digital production capabilities of the Maritime program, developing tools, templates, and standard blocks, and promoting learning and skill development.
Perform independent detailed quality assurance and control review of digital design work produced by others within the program.
Actively collaborate with digital production team and leadership to assess and prioritize program‑wide production demands, prioritize work, and deliver quality standards, schedule, and budget.
Actively participate in HDR's culture of employee ownership, office culture, develop a broad company network, and support cross‑sector projects.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of a two‑year associate degree in engineering technology or design and drafting technology or similar curriculum.
Advanced proficiency with Autodesk AutoCAD software.
Experience with and established competency in Autodesk Civil 3D.
Experience with and working competency in Bentley MicroStation.
At minimum, some prior experience and working knowledge of Autodesk Revit BIM software.
A minimum of 15 years related industry experience, with 10 years in marine structural and port‑related design.
Required Qualifications
Technical degree or a combination of education and relevant experience.
A minimum of 10 years related industry experience.
Advanced skillset of 3D design software and document management infrastructure.
Advanced skillset of 3D Coordination tools.
Competency in Microsoft Office products and communication tools.
Advanced understanding of engineering or architectural concepts.
Knowledge of industry standards and practices, along with discipline codes and specifications.
Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and organizational traits.
Leadership and mentoring skillsets required.
