Job Description The University of Florida Police Department invites applications for a vacant Police Communications Operator position. The employee is in a probationary status and works as a trainee under full‑time supervision of a communications training officer. During this period the employee will learn to become proficient and demonstrate proficiency in the following duties:

Operate communications command center, providing radio communication support to sworn and non‑sworn personnel.

Maintain radio/telephone communication links between field officers, base station, supervisors, emergency services, and other law‑enforcement agencies.

Receive and evaluate calls from the public requesting police assistance, both emergency and non‑emergency.

Input and transmit call information using the computer assisted dispatch system or manual card system.

Refer callers to appropriate agencies or extensions.

Contact appropriate parties to notify of complaints and/or required actions.

Use the computer assisted dispatch system to update and monitor law‑enforcement statuses, transmit requests for emergency services, and retrieve various data and records.

Coordinate the dispatching of resources between multiple agencies.

Perform records‑management duties: review, enter, cancel, and purge records.

This position is designated Essential. Essential employees may be recalled to work during emergencies, disasters, or special events.

Additional responsibilities include supporting large events such as home football games, providing communication coverage for pre‑ and post‑game periods, handling stadium assignments, and creating emergency notification messages.

Salary PCO I: $20.79 per hour; PCO II: $22.87 per hour.

Employees work 80 hours over two weeks. Overtime rate applies after the 40th hour of the first week.

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent and one year of relevant experience; applicable college coursework may substitute.

Pass a typing test with 35 CWPM.

Preferred Qualifications

Florida Department of Health Public Safety Telecommunicator (911 Emergency Dispatcher) state certification.

State certification on the NCIC/FCIC computer system.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of emergency/crisis response methods.

Knowledge of dispatch protocols and procedures.

Knowledge of UF geography, streets, and buildings.

Proficient typing and strong customer‑service skills.

Strong situational awareness and active listening.

Ability to multitask and make quick decisions under stress.

Effective verbal and written communication.

Physical Qualifications

Normal visual and hearing ranges, with or without correction.

Ability to stand, sit, and maneuver in a dispatch center.

Lift light to moderate weight occasionally and operate office equipment requiring repetitive typing.

Other Requirements

Criminal background check.

Post‑offer 7‑panel drug screening.

Willingness to work shift work, holidays, weekends, and overtime.

Veteran’s preference supported; upload DD‑214 copy if claiming preference.
