Mahaska Communications Group (MCG) is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to join our dynamic, fast‑paced team. In this role, you will operate machinery to support the accurate installation of underground telecommunications infrastructure. We’re looking for an experienced heavy equipment operator with a strong background in excavation or utility work, who is also open to training on and operating directional drilling equipment for telecom projects.
This position will work on construction projects throughout MCG’s service territory. Mileage and lodging will be reimbursed per company policy. Wage is competitive, benefits are exceptional, and each team member has the opportunity to receive profit sharing each year.
Essential Criteria
High school degree or GED is required.
A valid Iowa Class A CDL or the ability to obtain a Class A CDL (with tanker endorsement) within 60 days of hire.
Experience using hand tools and construction equipment preferred.
1+ year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment related to but not limited to directional drill, vacuum excavators, mini excavators, skid loaders, trenchers, cable plows, bucket trucks, aerial lifts, etc.
Must be able to follow and understand established standards.
Ability to work a variable schedule, days/nights and weekends as needed, and travel where needed.
Strong oral, written, and organizational skills.
Willingness to listen and learn.
Self‑motivated – need to work well unsupervised.
Must pass a pre‑employment physical, drug screen, and background check.
Roles and Responsibilities
Adhere to all safety regulations and industry standards (Company, Utility, Local, State, Federal).
Perform the setup and teardown of equipment and job sites verifying all hazards have been removed.
Develop a plan for the route by conducting daily route surveys and taking measurements to achieve accurate placement of underground infrastructure ensuring all utilities have been located/exposed according to company procedures.
Operate directional drilling equipment in a safe and efficient manner to install underground infrastructure while meeting project specifications.
Determine water needs based on ground conditions and complete mud mixing for boring. Fill water tanks.
Maintain and calibrate machinery, tools, and safety equipment as needed. Participate in emergency repair of equipment.
Provide accurate records of job activities and daily equipment reports. Perform QC & QA on all equipment and completed work.
Collaborate with lead, supervisor, and/or manager.
Other duties as assigned by lead, supervisor, and manager.
