Assistant Professor of Music (Choral Activities)
McCall School of Visual and Performing Arts, Coker University.
Job Description This tenure‑track appointment, beginning in August 2026, is at the Assistant Professor level and reports to the Director of the McCall School of Visual and Performing Arts. The role includes serving as the Director of Choral Activities.
Position Summary The Assistant Professor of Music/Director of Choral Activities is a key faculty member who sets the artistic vision for Coker University’s choral ensembles, leads rehearsals, and organizes and executes public performances. The successful candidate has a strong background in choral conducting and music education methods and demonstrates the ability to maintain and grow a strong choral program within a liberal arts context. The Director fosters a positive and inclusive environment, nurtures artistic growth for Coker University’s two choral groups—Coker Singers and the Coker Contemporary Chorus—and actively recruits students and community members by offering scholarships. Teaching in music theory, aural skills, and applied music lessons is also possible.
Principal Duties
Plan, rehearse, and conduct 1–3 choral ensemble performances per semester.
Recruit students (including non‑majors) and community members for choral ensembles.
Conduct daytime rehearsals for Coker Singers.
Conduct one weekly evening rehearsal for the Coker Contemporary Chorus.
Select appropriate choral repertoire for choral concerts.
Schedule and reserve performance spaces.
Communicate timely rehearsal and other announcements to ensemble members.
Organize and execute the annual Southern Singing Festival.
Plan and execute choir tours.
Participate in marketing and advertising of choral activities.
Teach courses in music education, music technology, and theory/aural skills.
Supervise student teaching interns in Music Education.
Recruit majors for the McCall School music programs.
Connect with local area high school choral programs.
Research, write, and submit external funding grants.
Collaborate with McCall School faculty and university departments.
Service through university committee work and administrative support.
Elevate the profile of the McCall School through national music organization memberships, preferably in a leadership position.
Essential Qualifications Education Doctorate (D.M.A. or Ph.D.) in Choral Conducting or Music Education (an A.B.D. may be considered if the degree is in hand by August 2025) with extensive experience conducting student and community choral ensembles in a higher education setting.
Experience
Extensive choral conducting of both university and community ensembles.
Developing strong choral programs within a liberal arts context.
Programming innovative, engaging, and exciting choral concerts.
Researching and selecting appropriate choral repertoire for a variety of concerts.
Working with university staff to promote ensemble membership and performances.
Interacting with the public during performances.
Organizing annual community music festivals, preferably celebrating Southern musical styles.
Teaching courses and recruiting students at the collegiate level.
Teaching beginning music theory, music education, music technology, and/or aural skills.
Teaching applied lessons in voice or other instruments.
Working in a K‑12 public school setting, preferably with current public school state certification to meet N.A.S.M. accreditation standards.
Contributing ideas for new and innovative pedagogy.
Supervising music education student teaching internships.
Emphasizing personalized learning in a small private liberal arts institution.
Working with singers from marginalized communities in both choral and applied lesson settings.
Working with students with a broad range of disabilities.
Developing meaningful professional relationships with university students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Writing and submitting grants for external funding.
Serving in organizational leadership positions, preferably with the SCACDA or similar group.
Attending national and international conferences and workshops.
Speaking, lecturing, adjudication, or workshop/clinician invitations.
Researching and writing, with publishing contacts.
