Principal Technical Writer – SAIC, Norfolk, VA (onsite). Local candidates preferred; 5–10 % travel.

SAIC has an immediate opening for a Principal Technical Writer to support our Logistics team in life‑cycle maintenance and integrated logistics product support for U.S. Navy systems. The successful candidate will have extensive recent experience providing life‑cycle support and technical writing/editing or technical system support for U.S. Navy systems.

The position involves submitting documentation for ATIS testing, requesting TMIN information, processing documents to FI, reviewing ILS certifications, determining applicable TMs, gathering logistics products, creating ILS CDs, responding to data calls, ordering nomenclature plates, proofing documents and NAVWAR cover sheets for Final Issue, applying APLs/XRIC to TMINs, updating SAILOR, and maintaining weekly documentation reports. Experience with equipment, hardware, and software systems verification is required.

Job Duties

Responsible for creating and preparing complex manuals and technical publications covering software, hardware, testing and other technical areas in support of U.S. Navy systems.

Collect and organize information; produce parts and systems illustrations using digital photography, 3D models, and line drawings; work directly with the customer to ensure contractual expectations are met; coordinate with the logistics support team on final deliverables.

Deliver complete operation and administration manuals for hands‑on equipment operation, Navy shipboard installation, and detailed troubleshooting procedures.

Produce hardware and software installation and configuration guides, training materials, reports, SOPs, interactive electronic documents, all meeting military and customer documentation standards.

Manage multiple projects, priorities and inputs within a matrixed organization with limited supervision.

Independently plan and schedule work activities to meet delivery dates.

Engage directly with customers and fleet users; perform detail‑oriented, time‑critical work.

Possess working knowledge of U.S. Navy and DOD logistics systems, including supply processes, provisioning, ECR process, baseline management, CDMD‑OA, and ILS certifications.

Have thorough knowledge and documented use of software systems/databases, including CMPro.

Participate in technical and programmatic meetings, providing status and defining documentation requirements and milestones.

Exercise independent judgment while managing multiple projects.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with 10 + years of related experience; Master’s degree with 8 + years; or equivalent experience.

Active Secret clearance to start.

Desired Skills

Experience with XML and MadCap Flare.

Experience with or exposure to CMPro, TDMIS, MBPS.

Ability to build relationships with technical subject‑matter experts to obtain required data; strong research and problem‑solving abilities.

Excellent attention to detail, strong work ethic, willingness to learn, excellent written and verbal communication, and ability to adjust to changing priorities.
