Position Description UCLA Extension is one of the most respected continuing education programs, offering more than 35,000 students per year. The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences offers a wide variety of certificate programs and courses, including post‑baccalaureate credit‑bearing courses, continuing‑education credits, and non‑credit general interest courses.

Course & Job Description The Writers’ Program spans Fiction, Non‑Fiction, Poetry, Screenwriting, Editing & Publishing, and Written Communication. Instructors develop syllabi from established templates, design courses, serve as instructor of record, evaluate student work, facilitate discussions, present lectures, create learning materials, host guest speakers, and complete required compliance trainings.

Instructor Duties

Complete university compliance trainings by the deadlines set by Human Resources.

Develop or update course syllabi to meet campus approval requirements, in consultation with the Program Director and Program Manager.

Use subject‑matter expertise to impart knowledge to students and arrange additional resources (guest speakers, etc.).

Design interactive and motivational classroom activities to fully engage participants and reinforce learning.

Update materials periodically and monitor course evaluations to improve the curriculum.

Use Canvas as a course support platform for in‑person courses and as the delivery platform for online and hybrid courses.

Post final student grades to the transcript system no later than two weeks after course end.

Respond to student questions and learning needs within 24 hours.

Communicate with Program Director and Program Staff in a timely manner.

Complete required administrative tasks promptly (new‑hire paperwork, quarterly syllabus updates, bio and photo posting, contract acceptance, textbook orders, classroom needs communication).

Participate in required orientations and instructor training programs.

Assist in occasional program activities such as competition judging, guest lecturing, community events, and script consultations.

Employ culturally competent and inclusive teaching methodologies.

Stay current on the professional body of knowledge in instruction.

Consult with Program Director as needed for final grade inquiries.

Maintain a record of final grades for up to 13 months after the last class session.

Special Conditions of Employment Instructors are hired on a quarterly contract basis. Compensation starts at $2,204 per course, paid monthly on the first day of the month, with rates varying by unit valuation and instructional hours.

Qualifications

Commitment to the highest level of academic standards and integrity.

Current knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in the subject area.

Highly effective oral and written communication skills.

Outstanding interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence.

Proficiency or willingness to learn instructional technology and online teaching tools.

College‑level and/or continuing education teaching experience preferred.

Experience designing curriculum and measuring student performance preferred.

Field‑specific Expertise

Creative Writing : documented publications (books, periodicals, literary magazines) with current/recent work; prior teaching experience preferred.

Screenwriting : documented produced scripts (features, teleplays, etc.) with current/recent productions; prior teaching experience preferred.

Editing & Publishing : professional experience as a staff member of a reputable publisher or press; prior teaching experience preferred.

Written Communication : prior teaching experience in English composition at the college level and an advanced degree (Master’s or higher).
