Writers' Program Instructor - Pool - UCLA Extension Position title: Instructor

Position Overview UCLA Extension offers more than 35,000 students per year, approximately 4,500 classes and non‑degree certificate programs across a wide range of disciplines. The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences provides a variety of certificate programs and courses, including post‑baccalaureate credit‑bearing courses, continuing education (CEU) credit, and non‑credit bearing general interest courses.

The Writers’ Program covers Fiction, Non‑fiction, Poetry, Screenwriting, Editing & Publishing, and Written Communication. Courses may be online (live or asynchronous) or in person in Westwood or Downtown Los Angeles.

Responsibilities

Develop or update course syllabi using an established template and gain campus approval.

Serve as instructor‑of‑record, evaluating student work, facilitating discussion, presenting lectures, and developing learning aids.

Design interactive and motivational classroom activities and update materials based on evaluations.

Use Canvas as a course support platform for in‑person and online courses.

Post final grades to the transcript system within two weeks after the course end date.

Respond to student questions and learning needs within 24 hours.

Communicate with the Program Director and Program Staff in a timely manner.

Complete required administrative tasks, including new‑hire paperwork, quarterly syllabus, bio/photo posting, contract acceptance, textbook orders, and classroom needs.

Participate in required orientations, instructor training programs, and occasional program activities such as judging competitions or guest lecturing.

Employ culturally competent and inclusive teaching methodologies for domestic and international students.

Maintain a record of final grades for up to 13 months.

Complete annual and biannual University compliance trainings by HR deadlines.

Stay current with the professional knowledge in the field of instruction.

Qualifications

Commitment to the highest level of academic standards and integrity.

Current knowledge and demonstrated proficiency in the selected topic area.

Highly effective oral and written communication skills, including ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas.

Outstanding interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence.

Proficiency in or willingness to learn instructional technology and online teaching tools.

College‑level and/or continuing education teaching experience preferred.

Experience designing curriculum and measuring student performance preferred.

Topic‑Specific Requirements

Creative Writing:

Documented publications (books, periodicals, literary magazines) – recent publications preferred; prior teaching experience preferred.

Screenwriting:

Documented produced scripts (features, teleplays, etc.) – recent productions preferred; prior teaching experience preferred.

Editing & Publishing:

Professional experience as staff of a publisher or press (excluding self‑publishing and vanity presses) – recent experience preferred; prior teaching experience preferred.

Written Communication:

Prior teaching experience in English composition at the college level and an advanced degree (Master’s or higher).
