Background The Department of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking candidates for a Teaching Assistant Professor position in Musicology with expertise in musical theater and popular music. We wish to hire a pedagogically innovative colleague to serve a wide range of students pursuing a broad liberal arts education (https://ideasinaction.unc.edu/) across the university as well as music majors and minors studying western art music, jazz, musical theater, and popular music. The selected candidate will teach courses on the history and culture of musical theater, rock music, and popular music, along with other courses that align with the candidate’s research interests and our departmental mission as outlined on our website (https://music.unc.edu/about/).

Position Summary This is a full-time, teaching-track (non-tenure-track) position with an initial 3-year appointment and the possibility of renewal and promotion. Teaching load will be three (3 credit-hour) courses per semester or the equivalent. Responsibilities begin on July 1, 2026.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements The successful candidate will have a graduate degree in a relevant field.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience Preference will be given for candidates holding a Ph.D. or equivalent in Musicology or related field, and who have at least two years of classroom teaching experience at the university level. The committee may solicit additional materials including letters of recommendation, one writing sample (a complete chapter or article, which may be in draft form), a sample syllabus, and a teaching statement that addresses strategies candidates might use in a public university setting where students reflect the socioeconomic, racial, religious, and other diverse characteristics across the state.
