Library Technician – Branch Libraries (Part-time)
Town of Amherst – North Amherst and Munson Memorial Library branches.
Responsibilities
- Provide customer service to patrons in‑person and by telephone, answering questions about library use, available services, borrowing policies, and the computer catalog.
- Direct patrons to locations of various collections, advise on reading materials, and refer questions requiring further research, decision‑making, or time to the appropriate personnel.
- Register new borrowers by reviewing application forms, verifying signatures, and entering information into the computer database; renew patron library cards and update contact information.
- Search for requested and reserved materials in the computer database and on shelves for individuals, teachers, class projects, and other library patrons; maintain records of request status and notify patrons when items are available.
- Handle charges and discharges of materials using the computer system; check accuracy of all dates and numbers; sort returned materials by classification and by library; store materials on shelves in the correct sequence; prepare for statewide delivery routing.
- Examine materials for physical damage and take appropriate action; review patron accounts for overdue items and unpaid bills; instruct patrons on payment options for overdue, lost, or damaged materials; collect payments and make change, including for items sold from the Library’s book sale area and merchandise.
- Assist in preparing book displays, flyers, exhibits, and posters; work on special projects and substitute in other departments as assigned.
- Assist with Summer Reading Club, craft programs, and other library activities; advise patrons on library protocol and alert staff or authorities to disruptive public behavior.
- Secure the building and close the library as needed, clearing people according to established procedures.
- Perform other duties as related or assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent plus 1–3 years of experience working with library software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to work with alphabetical and numeric organization.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Knowledge of information tools and an understanding of the changing library service environment.
- Excellent technology skills and proficiency in customer service.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate with cultural competence.
- Experience working in a customer service capacity with people of differing ages and backgrounds.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment and handle stressful situations.
- Team‑player with effective relationships with co‑workers and the general public.
- Preparedness to encounter challenging interactions and willingness to learn and seek solutions with supervisors and colleagues.
- Availability to work weekday and Saturday shifts.
