AMHERST Library Technician - Youth and Adult (Part Time)
The Library Technician provides courteous and friendly assistance with Library use and technology to people of all ages and from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. Performs computer-based tasks related to loaning Library materials and maintaining patron borrowing records. Must be available to work evening and Saturday shifts.
Responsibilities
- Provide customer service to patrons in-person and by telephone, answering questions on the use of the Library, on available services, on borrowing policies, and on the computer catalog, periodical lists and indexes;
- Direct patrons to locations of various collections, and advise on reading materials;
- Refer questions requiring further research, decision-making, or time to the appropriate persons, and route telephone callers as required;
- Register new borrowers – review application forms for completeness, accuracy, and appropriate identification, verify signatures, and enter information into the computer database;
- Renew patron library cards and update contact information on patron library accounts;
- Search for requested and reserved materials on computer database and on shelves for individuals, teachers, class projects, and other libraries;
- Maintain records on status of requests and notify patrons when items are available; refer special cases to supervisor;
- Charge and discharge materials using the computer system; check accuracy of all dates and numbers;
- Sort returned materials by classification and by library; return materials to shelves accurately in specific sequence or prepare for statewide delivery routing;
- Examine materials for physical damage and take appropriate action;
- Review patron accounts for long overdue items and unpaid bills; instruct patrons on payment options for overdue, lost, or damaged library materials, in consultation with the Head of Youth Services, exercising judgement to offer flexibility on a case-by-case basis;
- Assist with all aspects of programming for children ages 0-10 and teens ages 11-17, including craft programs, story times, book clubs, weekly teen programs, and special events and performances;
- Assist with preparation and presentation of annual Summer Reading Program; may be asked to assist during school visits and community outreach events;
- Assist in preparing book displays, flyers, exhibits, and posters; work on special projects as assigned; may be asked to assist with Summer Reading Club, craft programs, and other activities;
- Perform other duties as related or assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent, plus one (1) to three (3) years of experience in a library, office, or retail environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Ability to work with alphabetical and numeric organization;
- Strong attention to detail;
- Knowledge of information tools and an understanding of the changing library service environment;
- Excellent technology skills; ability to operate a personal computer and an intermediate skill level with Microsoft Excel and Word; ability to use listed tools;
- Proficient customer service skills;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with cultural competence;
- Experience working in a customer service capacity with people of differing ages and backgrounds;
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle stressful situations;
- Ability to work well as a part of a team and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers and the general public;
- Preparedness to encounter challenging interactions and willingness to learn and seek out solutions with the help of supervisors and colleagues;
- Availability to work weekday and Saturday shifts.
