Reporting to the Assistant Director of Revenue Management, the incumbent will perform insurance verification and pre-authorization for outpatient services, ensuring services meet medical necessity guidelines and maximizing reimbursement.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Contact insurance providers to obtain any applicable authorization types prior to service, coordinate with third-party payers, and monitor expirations to initiate extensions.
  • Document and update all authorizations obtained in UI Health systems and scan appropriate documents.
  • Maintain assigned workqueues, meet lead times, document task completion, and update ongoing tasks.
  • Consistently perform and exceed departmental minimum expected productivity goals.
  • Complete registration and coverage verification, determine patient eligibility, contact patients for correct insurance information, and inform patients of UI Health self-pay policy. Update demographic/coverage/eligibility information in the UI Health system.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients, providers, and clinic staff in person and via telephone, with respect and courtesy.
  • Continuously educate on payers, payer requirements, and UI Health contracts, maintaining technical knowledge necessary for financial clearance.
  • Stay current on changing policies, documentation, and payer requirements.
  • Maintain competence and technical knowledge, and keep a working knowledge of necessary registration and eligibility systems.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year (12 months) of experience from the categories below:
  • College coursework or training from a vocational, technical, or armed forces program related to business, communication, health care administration, health information technology, health sciences, public health, social sciences, or a closely related field, with equivalent conversion: 30 semester hours = 1 year; Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) = 1.5 years; 90 semester hours = 2 years; Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) = 3 years.
  • Work experience in a medical setting (e.g., business administration, billing, collections, customer service, health information technology, medical insurance, patient admission/registration, patient services) or related experience.
  • One year of work experience in a medical setting obtaining preauthorization approval from medical insurance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluent Spanish speaker.
