Executive Director, Communications – Job Description The Executive Director, Communications leads the development of communications strategies for assigned clients and serves as the primary interface between the Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) Communications Department and their clients’ executive and operational leaders. This role is a strategic partner in supporting client business goals and reports to the Vice President of Communications.

Key duties include partnering with client leadership to develop and implement business cases and integrated communications plans that utilize multiple channels to engage employees, patients, prospective patients, physicians, and the media. The position requires a deep understanding of clients’ culture, strategy, operations, competitive landscape, and financial performance, as well as strong relationships with senior management to advance reputation, employee engagement, and patient volume.

Responsibilities

Builds strategic relationships with client administrative and clinical leadership, attending senior leadership meetings to inform communications priority-setting.

Identifies business challenges and communication opportunities based on detailed knowledge of clients’ culture, engagement priorities, clinical services, competitive positioning, research, and financial performance.

Develops strategic communication plans in support of client priorities, partnering with the client and the Strategic Planning department.

Understands and develops communication priorities to engage clinicians and staff, coordinating the development of Internal Communications strategies.

Interfaces with subject‑matter experts in BILH Communications and Marketing’s Centers of Expertise (Media Relations, Internal Communications, Social Media, etc.) to support clients’ day‑to‑day needs and business objectives.

Ensures the development and presentation of performance analysis and reporting for communication campaigns to senior leadership.

Oversees the communications team’s timely support of client needs and provides guidance and direction to departmental staff.

Allocates and manages budgets and, when applicable, supervises and evaluates direct reports.

Education Bachelor's degree in Communications, Business Administration, or a related field required. Master's degree strongly preferred.

Experience

More than 12 years of related work experience in health care or a related field.

Leadership experience in large integrated systems and/or academic medical centers strongly preferred.

3–5 years of supervisory/management experience required.

Experience managing communication resources (budgets and staff) and deploying them effectively.

Demonstrated experience addressing broad, complex, and abstract problems, often involving system‑wide issues and requiring creativity, resourcefulness, staff engagement, negotiation, and diplomacy.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to set direction and vision for major departments or multiple departments; establishes priorities and allocates resources.

Ability to make decisions with significant, broad implications for the management and operations of a major department(s); participates in overall strategy and direction of the organization.

Ability to summarize and communicate moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external audiences.

Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information to staff, patients, families, and external audiences.

Broad and comprehensive knowledge of theories, concepts, practices, and policies with the ability to apply them in complex or unprecedented situations across multiple functional areas.

Advanced skills with Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other web‑based applications); able to produce complex documents, perform analysis, and maintain databases.

Excellent market research, analytical, and problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills preferred.

Strong skills to produce results and achieve predetermined goals within budget and time constraints.

Pay Range $175,000.00 USD – $190,000.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on factors such as seniority, education, training, relevant experience, certifications, geographic location, job responsibilities, or other permissible factors.
