The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is seeking a Director of Communications and Marketing to lead the organization’s marketing strategy and day-to-day communications efforts. This role blends strategic direction with hands‑on execution across SAF’s website, email and print marketing, social media, online advertising, and brand management. The Director will collaborate closely with departments and program leads to promote SAF’s priorities and ensure consistent, effective communication across the organization. Key areas of focus include member communications, events, publications, professional development, credentialing, public policy, state society engagement, governance, fundraising, and sub-brands such as the US Capitol Christmas Tree and #forestproud. The Director will both shape overall strategy and directly execute key components of the work, particularly content development, digital communication, and campaign implementation. Applicants should be comfortable switching between “big‑picture” thinking and day‑to‑day operational tasks. The Director of Communications and Marketing will report to the Senior Director of Events and Sales. This is an exempt role, remote or hybrid (Washington, DC), and partially grant‑funded position.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Strategize with CEO and Senior Director of Events and Sales to shape the overall vision and promotion of SAF and its programs.

Develop and oversee marketing strategies and campaigns that showcase SAF’s programs, sub-brands, and annual priorities.

Coordinate with directors and program leads to develop the department deliverables and scope of work.

Manage two team members (marketing specialist and social media specialist) and provide administrative oversight for department.

Serve as the primary media contact for SAF, with the CEO as primary spokesperson.

Create weekly and monthly program updates to provide to supervisor.

Develop annual budget for department and manage implementation.

Attend up to 5 events per year on behalf of SAF, including our flagship event, the SAF National Convention.

Manage and update SAF’s website, email, and print marketing, online advertising, and social media channels in collaboration with staff and program leads.

Provide strategic oversight for SAF website, logo, and other branding materials.

Cultivate and manage relationships with staff, volunteers, partners, and members.

Ensure communications processes and brand standards are being followed and implemented by staff, members, and partners.

Assist supervisor and CEO with other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

Positive, can‑do approach to both leadership responsibilities and hands‑on execution, especially within a small, high‑impact team.

Proven ability to lead teams and drive strategic planning efforts.

Demonstrated experience in marketing and public relations, including strategy, design, copyediting, and contractor relations.

Demonstrated experience in developing and executing marketing plans; communications campaign management; and website content management.

Advanced in Windows‑based applications (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Adobe Creative Suite applications for graphic design and video editing.

Intermediate knowledge of website design software and HTML, association management software (iMIS preferred), Google Analytics, social media management software (Hootsuite), and mass e‑mail marketing platforms (MailChimp).

A team player who is personable, adaptable, and has an excellent customer service ethic.

Experience working with sensitive data and protecting confidential information.

Highly organized and task‑oriented with excellent written and oral communication skills.

Detail‑oriented, proactive, self‑starter, with a positive, hands‑on attitude and a desire to grow and develop in the position, on the team, and within the association.

Exceptional time‑management skills and ability to multi‑task and handle multiple deadlines at once.

Takes full ownership of projects from start to finish, ensuring consistent follow‑through.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a team member.

As a remote or hybrid position, all candidates must have the ability to work from home comfortably with full access to internet and ability to be on video phone calls with staff and partners.

Qualifications And Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, forestry and natural resources, or any other related field.

At least 5 years of experience with communications for small businesses, nonprofits, or associations or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training required.

1‑2 years of supervisory experience.

Preferred Education/Skills

Association and volunteer management experience is a plus.

Knowledge and passion for forests and natural resources is a plus.

Annual Salary And Benefits

$75,000‑85,000
