Purpose of Classification The City of Boynton Beach Communications Center answers all emergency and non-emergency calls for police, fire, and emergency medical services. The Communications Division is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including holidays, and protects the residents of Boynton Beach as the lifeline between the public and first responders. Applicants must be available to work shifts that may include weekends, late nights, holidays, and mandatory overtime.

Position Starting Annualized Salary

Communications Operator I (Non-Certified): $63,617.64

Communications Operator I (Certified): $66,798.54

Essential Functions

Perform multiple tasks simultaneously; take appropriate action when presented with routine or stressful life/death situations; remain calm under all circumstances.

Answer incoming telephone calls; receive and transmit information, complaints, and requests for assistance.

Communicate effectively and coherently over law enforcement, fire, rescue, and EMS radio channels; obtain necessary information; dispatch patrol cars, detectives, rescue squads, wreckers, and fire trucks; request ambulances; conduct investigations on some calls; assign case numbers to calls.

Maintain conversation with callers to obtain/verify pertinent information and to comfort them until assistance arrives; provide pre‑arrival medical instructions and CPR assistance over the telephone; interact with highly emotional individuals experiencing death, illness, domestic abuse, child abuse, mental illness, suicide, or natural disasters.

Operate teletype NCIC/FCIC and Palms; enter and retrieve information from computer; modify, locate, maintain, save, and/or clear files and records within database.

Operate radios; perform Fire Department morning radio check; monitor radio channels.

Provide information and addresses to the public and police as requested; maintain information on pursuits; know location of units at all times.

Update City and County locations and phone numbers.

Maintain logs and records of radio activities, police actions, and calls taken by Fire Department; prepare and file a variety of reports.

Notify appropriate personnel and/or supervisor of critical situations, weather‑related information, and problems with communications or computer equipment.

Attend training courses as offered by the department or as required by law to maintain applicable certifications and stay informed of departmental operations.

Cooperate with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and their officers or representatives when activities are related to investigations with City jurisdiction.

Takes and relays messages to officers and firefighters, other divisions, or local agencies; disseminates information to various departments and divisions.

Maintain cleanliness of work area; restock supplies.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Must become certified by the Florida and National Crime Information Center (FCIC/NCIC) within six months of employment, in addition to basic Telecommunicator training.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.

Must possess and maintain State of Florida 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification within one (1) year of employment.

Physical And Sensory Requirements / Environmental Factors Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods at a keyboard or workstation.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals; some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
