Traffic Signal Technician 1 (OPEN & PROMOTIONAL) Position scheduled to work 40 hours per week.

Responsibilities

Assists in installation, maintenance and repair of traffic control, warning and illumination systems and their components; is a lead worker to temporary summer help and/or seasonal employees; operates all equipment and motor vehicles including a man lift truck used in the completion of this work.

Completes less complex electronic work (tests and times signal controllers, emergency preemption systems and auxiliary components; troubleshoots electronic systems, detects and replaces defective parts).

Locates underground street light and traffic signal conduit wiring for contractors and utility companies, after appropriate training.

Installs new signal heads, lays conduit, installs junction boxes, and installs pedestrian beacons.

May be required to work on‑call, to make emergency repairs.

Maintains logs and records.

Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

One (1) year basic electrical technician's course through an accredited and approved program.

One (1) year of applicable electronic work experience may be substituted for the required one (1) year of basic electrical technician’s course work.

A combination of one (1) year technical work and computer‑related experience may be substituted for the electrical or electronic coursework or experience, and the probationary period may be extended until satisfactory completion of on‑the‑job training as determined by the Department Head.

Possession of a valid Washington Driver's License at time of hire and for the duration of employment.

Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, instruments and tools used in the installation and maintenance of electronic or electrical systems and equipment.

Skilled in communicating effectively both orally and in writing, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.

Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Skilled in the use of tools and testing devices used in electrical and electronic trades.

Skilled in locating and repairing defects in electronic or electrical systems.

Skilled in the use of personal computers and familiar with various hardware and software programs.

Ability to work in compliance with all safety requirements, occupational hazards and applicable precautionary measures related to work assignments including traffic control in construction and maintenance work areas.

Ability to interpret and apply provisions of the National Electrical Manufacturers' Association Codes (NEMA) and the Washington State Manual on Uniform Traffic Control devices.

Ability to work from blueprints, sketches, schematic diagrams, timing instruction charts and specifications.

Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical tasks.

Possession of an International Municipal Signal Association Level 1 Certification or passing of an equivalent test.

Who May Apply Open to all applicants meeting the minimum requirements. Priority consideration will be given to regular Spokane County employees in a position covered by the PROTEC17 bargaining unit applying between 11/20/25 and 12/5/25.
