Library Clerk – Amarillo Independent School District
Primary Purpose
– Perform routine clerical and technical duties so the librarian is free to work directly with students and teachers.
Qualifications
Minimum Education/Certification: A high school diploma or equivalent.
Associates (or higher) degree OR meet district quality standard.
Library Technical Assistance training – preferred.
Special Knowledge/Skills
Strong communication, public relations, and organizational skills.
Computer skills are mandatory; proficient typing; keyboarding and file maintenance skills.
Ability to shelve books following district cataloging system.
Ability to work well with children.
Effective, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written).
Work Conditions
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, computer and peripherals; standard library equipment including imaging equipment; instructional equipment.
Posture: Regular sitting, standing, kneeling, squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting.
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; regular overhead reaching; climbing ladders.
Lifting: Frequent light lifting (under 15 lbs); occasional moderate lifting (up to 40 lbs).
Environment: Work inside; work alone; exposure to mold and dust.
Mental Demands: Frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.
Regular attendance is an essential function.

One or more years preferable in an office or library clerical position.
Experience Working With School Age Children – Preferred Major Responsibilities and Duties Instructional
Assist students and teachers locating print and electronic information; instruct on computer/internet usage, electronic card catalog, online catalogs, and databases.
Help students create a final product using library resources.
Read to small groups and listen to students read aloud (elementary only).
Supervise and monitor students as assigned; assist librarian and teachers maintain appropriate behavior and orderly atmosphere.
Technology
Help operate, instruct, and maintain library technology devices; assist students and teachers in using online automation system.
Operate, instruct, troubleshoot, and maintain audiovisual equipment and other tech in the library.
Acquisitions/Cataloging/Collection Maintenance
Maintain library automation systems by loading, attaching and deleting records.
Periodically publish updated lists of new materials, video inventory.
Assist librarian with annual inventory; make corrections in electronic shelf list.
Maintain records of material ordered and received.
Circulation
Use online circulation systems to check materials, create library cards, maintain records such as overdues and inventories, keep a check‑in/out calendar for equipment.
Assist students and teachers locating print and non‑print resources.
Locate and prepare carts of materials for teachers’ classroom projects.
Clerical
Operate library in librarian’s absence, logging onto online databases.
Submit work orders for equipment repairs; maintain and order supplies as requested.
Maintain organizational integrity of the library facility including shelving, displays, and bulletin boards.
Maintain financial records related to lost book payments, book fair sales, overdue fines.
Other
Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Ensure compliance with all local policies and state and federal statutes including the Educator Code of Ethics.
Perform other tasks and accept responsibilities as assigned.
