Job Summary The Communications Professional is responsible for creating and maintaining comprehensive communications and outreach strategies to support Parking & Transportation Services, Emergency Management and the University Police Department (UPD). This role focuses heavily on leveraging social media and digital platforms to inform, educate, and engage the campus community on key topics such as parking regulations, traffic safety, crime prevention, emergency preparedness, and alternative transportation options. The Communications Professional ensures a cohesive, student-centered, and service-oriented digital presence across both departments, aligning messaging and outreach efforts to enhance awareness, support safety initiatives, and foster community trust.

Responsibilities

Digital Communications & Social Media Strategy: Under general supervision, applies knowledge of marketing and communication principles to plan, implement, and evaluate digital campaigns. Independently handles the development and execution of cohesive social media strategies for Parking Services, Emergency Management, and University Police Department (UPD) across platforms including Instagram, X/Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok.

Creates and publishes engaging digital content - including posts, reels, stories, and educational videos - to promote safety, transportation services, and community initiatives. Utilizes digital analytics tools to track and interpret engagement data, identify trends, and adjust messaging strategies. Ensures timely and accurate messaging during emergencies, countering misinformation and aligning responses with university protocols.

Public Relations, Marketing & Community Engagement: Supports the planning and execution of outreach initiatives that align with departmental and university goals. Independently promotes programs and services through timely communications, storytelling, and public safety messaging. Coordinates the design and distribution of digital and print collateral - such as flyers, signage, brochures, and email campaigns - to enhance visibility and public understanding of key initiatives.

Plans and supports high-impact outreach events including safety fairs, emergency drills, orientations, and crime prevention programs. Aligns outreach efforts with CSU 21st Century Policing Principles, IACLEA Accreditation Standards, and Chancellor's Office expectations. Builds trust through effective messaging that reinforces safety, transparency, and campus engagement.

Visual Content Creation & Brand Alignment: Designs and produces high-quality visual and multimedia content using tools such as Adobe Creative Suite and Canva. Ensures consistency of branding and messaging across departments while adhering to campus and CSU-wide brand guidelines. Supports creative development for both internal and external communications, including event signage, digital displays, presentation materials, and branded kits for outreach.

Website & Internal Communications: Maintains and updates the Emergency Management website to support compliance, user engagement, and accreditation. Tracks key performance indicators (KPIs) related to public safety education and collaborates with Risk Management to communicate insights via internal newsletters and reports. Serves as liaison with the Office of Strategic Communication to ensure alignment with broader university campaigns and incident response messaging.

Administrative & Operational Support: Performs a variety of administrative support tasks to assist department operations, including document preparation, data entry, and standard office procedures. Provides communication and logistics support to department leadership and assists with additional duties as assigned to advance strategic communication objectives across Parking, Emergency Management, and UPD units.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Required Qualifications

Working skills and knowledge of marketing, communications, public relations, branding, and/or related disciplines.

Working knowledge of protocols and institutional etiquette related to public and media relations.

Working knowledge of copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications and the media.

Skilled in developing and implementing marketing and/or communications strategies and campaigns.

Strong project planning and organizational skills to plan, organize, and manage multiple marketing projects.

Strong composition and editing skills to quickly produce clear and concise standard documents for internal and external publication.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills to create and deliver marketing initiatives and campaigns.

Ability to provide lead work direction and training to others.

Proficiency in using communication and marketing software and tools.

Compensation & Benefits Anticipated Hiring Steps: $5,178.00 per month (Step 1)

Classification Salary Steps: $5,178.00 per month - $7,543.00 per month (Step 1 - Step 20)

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Position Information Work status: Full-time/Exempt/Temporary (up to one year with the possibility of further renewal)

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Drivers License Check: Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the DMV Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
