Overview

The Design Manager acts as the group manager, reporting directly to the Engineering Manager. In this position, the Design Manager is responsible for the career development of Design Engineers, including training and coaching, career pathways, and skill development. The Design Manager oversees the investigation, recommendation, and implementation of new technologies to support both in-house processes and end‑customer projects. Regular one‑on‑one meetings with direct reports and bi‑weekly team meetings are expected.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with coworkers, customers, and suppliers to utilize the latest technologies for integration into distribution and production solutions.
• Understand customer goals to develop and support smart engineered solutions.
• Oversee team members through all project phases: research, concepting, sales support, component selection, system design, drawing package creation, design review, testing, and troubleshooting.
• Assign and oversee engineering duties, mentor team members, and serve as a mentor for experienced engineers and Team Leads.
• Teach and orchestrate larger teams, demonstrating the ability to manage deadlines and motivate teams.
• Transfer subject‑matter expertise and understanding to employees, customers, and vendors.
• Apply project‑management skills to delegate independent and collaborative tasks.
• Make critical decisions to support the team and projects, troubleshoot and solve design and project issues independently.

Job Functions

• Promote and drive creation, modification, and testing of equipment designs and layouts per customer and Bastian Solutions specifications.
• Collaborate with engineering managers and leads to promote efficient creation and execution of simulations for reach studies, cycle‑time estimates, and offline programming.
• Ensure ISO training occurs regularly and processes are followed, with continuous improvement.
• Ensure drawing and release packages are created and reviewed to provide quality releases with minimal defects.
• Improve and automate the creation of mechanical bills of materials per SolidWorks and AutoCAD models, drawings, and schematics.
• Oversee pre‑release of system mechanical components with Project Managers.
• Update drawings to create proper revision As‑Built and As‑Installed packages for installation and maintenance teams.
• Promote development, documentation, and improvement of standard equipment and library items.
• Communicate schedules, plans, and training to internal and external personnel.
• Review maintenance manuals, preventative maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting guides for template adherence and ease of use.
• Attend and encourage training to become certified in applicable technologies or programs.
• Display thorough knowledge of applicable theories, practices, and business practices.
• Lead internal training sessions for ongoing career and skills development across departments.
• Drive accurate entries, reporting, and scheduling related to team member project billings and utilization.
• Review project financial reports and seek continuous improvement through material costs and engineering efficiencies.
• Develop and mentor new and existing leads and engineers through scheduled one‑on‑ones, department meetings, and performance evaluations.
• Critique equipment designs per customer and Bastian Solutions specifications.
• Establish and delegate work tasks to meet departmental expectations.
• Interface with external clients to build relationships for future business opportunities.
• Work independently on varied and complex tasks, providing functional leadership without direct supervision as needed.
• Guide less experienced individuals and review technical documentation of peers and vendors.
• Contribute to the office as a team member, providing help outside departmental scope when required.
• Deliver projects that meet or exceed customer expectations, developing repeat customers.
• Attend meetings and functions on time with active involvement.
• Research new components and materials, recommend adoption into standards.
• Coordinate with other managers, engineers, or teams to ensure component accountability across disciplines.
• Support after‑sales personnel on technical aspects of equipment and systems.
• Support project installations and post‑startup mechanical maintenance trips.
• Prepare procedures, reports, and specifications.
• Perform discipline checks on product/equipment design and technical documentation.
• Oversee design validation tests and reporting.
• Perform supervisory tasks such as timesheet approvals, expense reports, and performance reviews.

Travel Expectations

• Approximately 20% travel to other sites (all travel expense paid by company).

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

• 7+ years of leadership experience with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or Technology, or 12+ years of relevant industry experience.
• Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
• Literacy with Microsoft Office product suite.
• Mechanical hands‑on aptitude with troubleshooting know‑how.
• SolidWorks and AutoCAD 2D and 3D experience.
• Design for Manufacturing/Digital Assembly experience, producing fabrication, welding, and assembly drawings from 3D models efficiently.
• Fluent in advanced analysis techniques (e.g., FEA, SolidWorks Simulator).
• Customer‑facing service skills.
• Effective problem solving and time management.
• Ability to multitask and set priorities based on project management direction.
• Proficient with technical writing processes.
• Willingness to share skills, knowledge, and expertise.
• Personal interest in mentoring relationships.
