Senior Weather Editor, CNN Weather
Join CNN Weather as a senior, digital‑first weather journalist or meteorologist who will lead and manage the team’s storytelling. You will help teams produce compelling, timely, and accurate weather content across all platforms and support CNN’s mission to inform and inspire audiences about weather and climate.
Role Overview
CNN Weather is seeking an experienced editor who thrives in the breakneck pace of extreme weather. You will guide coverage, manage urgency, and develop creative angles that illuminate the climate crisis.
Accountabilities
- Identify and execute a coverage plan around the weather story of the day, including hurricanes, droughts, and new visualizations.
- Serve as point of contact for the CNN Weather team at times, operating without direct supervision.
- Handle complex reporting and editing, alerting the broader CNN network to breaking news.
- Assign and edit stories in the breaking news space, including urgent, rapidly updating digital coverage of extreme weather.
- Write and edit across diverse formats: short‑form storytelling, visualizations, video scripts, social media posts.
- Develop and execute distinctive story ideas and angles around complex topics.
- Collaborate with photo editors, video producers, and designers to convey the impact of extreme weather and climate change.
- Ensure all stories and videos are accurate, fair, and meet CNN’s high editorial standards before distribution.
Qualifications & Experience
- At least 8 years of digital editorial experience in extreme weather or climate reporting; degree in meteorology, climate science, or related field preferred.
- Ability to maintain a flexible schedule around major weather events.
- Experience handling complex news or topics without supervision.
- Passion for weather, climate, and science with deep knowledge of U.S. weather.
- Track record of writing and editing fast‑moving breaking news with excellent weather and climate news judgment.
- Strong pitching and headline instincts that engage audiences.
- Experience framing stories for a national audience in collaboration with reporters, producers, and meteorologists.
- Familiarity with weather data and visualizations.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
- College degree or equivalent.

Compensation
Pay Range: $78,540.00 – $145,860.00 per year (varies by location, experience, and performance). Additional rewards may include annual bonuses, incentives, and awards.
