Deputy Managing Editor – Investigative Journalism
American Public Media Group, St. Paul, MN – Salary: $110,000–$130,000 USD. The Deputy Managing Editor (DME) guides the APM Reports team within MPR News, leading award‑winning investigative and documentary reporting across the organization. The DME will lead the team on complex, original journalism, set vision, mentor staff, uphold high standards, and work with partners and networks for investigative projects.

Work Schedule
This position will be based in Minnesota, with occasional nights, weekends, and holidays in addition to regular hours.
Compensation and Location
Expected Compensation Range: $110,000–$130,000 USD annualized.
Work Location: St. Paul, MN

Position Responsibilities
- Manage team workflows to maintain a broad content stream and impactful stories for all channels
- Lead the MPR News/APM Reports editorial leadership team; ensure teams meet daily and project deadlines
- Assist with determining news coverage priorities
- Participate in and help lead editorial meetings
- Assign stories and support MPR News coverage needs and processes
- Coordinate across channels, including digital, production, images, video, graphics, and marketing
- Foster a knowledge‑sharing environment
- Work on special projects as assigned
- Champion and develop high journalism standards for enterprise reporting
Required Education And Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, or a related field (or equivalent work experience)
- 5 years of editorial, enterprise, and/or supervisory journalism experience
- 10 years of journalism reporting or producing experience
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Proficient in news gathering, editing, and fact‑checking
- Experienced with AP Style and data journalism reporting
- Proven track record of editing original, complex investigative stories on tight deadlines
- History of producing sophisticated, high‑quality journalism on complex topics
- Strong capacity for managing teams and multi‑stakeholder reporting
- Experience with legally sensitive or confidential information and discretion
- Ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously under tight timelines
- Ability to work and lead efficiently, calmly, and cooperatively under deadline pressure
- Willingness to innovate, learn new skills, and create ways to serve the audience across channels

- Experience with long‑format or podcasting production
- Ability to inspire, mentor, and build successful teams
- Strategic and digital thinker who never buries the lead

- Familiarity with digital and production systems such as CMS and audio production

Physical Demands and Working Conditions
