Purpose of Division

The Houston Airport System (HAS) Maintenance, Insource Maintenance Services, business unit is to effectively deliver self-performed maintenance services at each of the three HAS airports.

Purpose of the Position

The Graphic Designer – Sm. Construction Maintenance provides visual concepts, develops layouts, and produces designs and signage. It involves constructing, installing, and maintaining work in a manner that maximizes value to customers, applying innovation and appropriate engineering and financial principles within the three HAS airports.

Must be able to pass a criminal background check and obtain/maintain federally mandated security clearances where required.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, researches and develops concepts for a variety of graphic arts projects (pamphlets, posters, brochures, displays) using conventional methods and photography.
  • Uses computers and conventional methods to design and produce a wide variety of graphic art and promotional materials.
  • Plans, researches and develops concepts for visual communications such as publications, print, displays and electronic media.
  • Attends project-planning meetings with clients, contractors, team members, supervisors and other professionals involved.
  • Consults with applicable members during the design process about materials, layout, specifications and product.
  • Assembles and prepares charts, graphs, signs and maps to designated scale; produces still and animated computer graphics formats for video presentations; designs and installs exhibits and displays; may photograph subjects for promotional purposes.
  • Provides aesthetic and technical direction to others assisting in projects.
  • May act as project leader or designer for multimedia presentations (e.g., internet, interactive CDs, videos).
  • May photograph layouts and develop negatives/prints to produce layout photographs.
  • May select and requisition materials and supplies.

Working Conditions

The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting (up to 20 pounds) may be required. Occasional exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture, and unpleasant air conditions. May involve exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances. Requires the ability to perform fairly complex coordinated motor movements in response to changing external stimuli.

Educational Requirements

An Associate's degree in Graphic Arts or a closely related field, or certification/licensing in a technical specialty program of at least two years is required.

Experience

Two years of experience in graphic design, using a computer and conventional methods, are required. Two years of professional graphic design experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

License Requirements

May require a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

  • Experience with design software (Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Creative Suite etc.)
  • Skills in both print and digital media
  • Demonstrated artistic skills, an eye for aesthetics, and the ability to translate ideas into visuals

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

Selection/Skills Tests

The selection process will involve application review and/or interview. The department may administer a skills assessment test.

Safety

Safety Impact Position – Yes. This position is subject to random drug testing. If it is a promotional position, the candidate must pass a pre-employment drug test.

Pay and Salary Information

Pay Grade 17. Salary determined by qualifications and pay rates of other employees in this classification.
