Learning & Design Specialist – College of Medicine Focus
Summary
The Learning and Design Specialist will primarily support the D'Youville University College of Medicine by collaborating with faculty to design, develop, and enhance learning experiences across all delivery modalities. This position emphasizes the application of learning science, instructional design methodologies, and educational technology to create engaging, effective, and compliant medical education content. While the primary focus is on the College of Medicine, the specialist may also be called upon to support other academic programs across the university as needed.
Responsibilities
Reports to the Director of the Institute for Teaching Innovation (ITI)
Collaborates with medical faculty and course creators to produce engaging, evidence-based learning activities and course content that enhance retention and clinical application
Mentors faculty in the design and delivery of technology-enhanced learning experiences, including Canvas LMS integration and classroom-based instruction
Provides consultation, project management, and troubleshooting for technology integration in all medical courses
Develops and delivers customized professional development opportunities (e.g., workshops, peer engagement, individual training) tailored to medical education
Conducts Course Design Reviews using recognized quality assurance rubrics (e.g., Quality Matters), offering constructive feedback for continuous improvement
Cross-trains with other ITI and IT Services team members to ensure seamless support
Supports curriculum mapping and learning pathway development specific to medical education
Carries out additional assignments as directed by the Director of ITI
Evaluates instructional media and emerging technologies relevant to medical education
Provides technical support to faculty and students for educational tools and integrations
Conducts instructional research and analysis on medical learners and learning contexts
Ensures compliance with NY State and federal requirements, including Section 508 accessibility standards
Maintains current knowledge of educational technologies and pedagogical best practices through ongoing professional development
Supports help desk functions and troubleshooting for faculty and students
Qualifications Education Required
Bachelor's degree in instructional design, education, health sciences, or a related field
Preferred
Master's degree in instructional design, medical education, or a related discipline
Experience Required
Background in instructional design and curriculum development in medical or health-related fields
Demonstrated success in developing in person, online and hybrid learning experiences
Experience with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and simulation-based learning platforms
Experience developing and leading faculty trainings and professional development opportunities
Preferred
Advanced experience in learning experience design and application of learning science to medical education
Familiarity with competency-based education and backward design principles
Experience leading cross-functional curriculum or technology initiatives
Portfolio demonstrating successful learning design projects with measurable outcomes, preferably in a medical field

Ability to collaborate with subject matter experts and cross-functional teams
Knowledge of learning science, cognitive psychology, and design thinking methodologies
Experience conducting course reviews using recognized rubrics (e.g., Quality Matters, OSCAR, OLC)
Online and/or classroom teaching experience

Pay: $50,000 - $60,000 Annually
