Job Summary Dominion's Substation Engineering department is seeking a Motivated Designer to support Engineers in developing substation engineering physical design packages. This role is vital to the company’s transmission and distribution growth plans and includes support of projects that vary in size and complexity. While primarily office-based, periodic field trips to Dominion substations will be required.

Responsibilities

Create and modify construction/operating one‑lines, general arrangement plans, elevation plans, conduit plans, steel details, foundation details, and bill of materials for substation projects.

Work extensively with 3D design, primarily using Autodesk Inventor and Vault applications.

Interpret technical drawings such as onelines and outline diagrams (a plus).

Apply technical standards, processes, and procedures throughout the design lifecycle.

Collaborate effectively with cross‑functional teams while maintaining independence and seeking guidance when necessary.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

5+ years of design experience, including 1+ years of substation/utility experience.

1+ years of MicroStation or AutoCAD experience.

Strong experience and competence with Autodesk Inventor 3D Design and Vault Applications.

General understanding of electrical, mechanical, and civil design concepts.

Competency in applying technical concepts, standards, processes, and procedures.

Analytical thinking and problem‑solving abilities.

Knowledge of applicable regulations, related codes, and standards.

Knowledge of company design and operating standards.

Ability to work independently with minimal guidance while knowing when to involve others.

Experience with interpreting technical drawings (e.g., onelines, outline diagrams) is a plus.

Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, including technical writing.

Strong math skills, including geometry and trigonometry, required for complex calculations.

Must be able to meet NERC qualifications.

Education Requirements Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience. Preferred disciplines include Drafting and Design, Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Drawing.
