POSITION SUMMARY UC Press has a mission to drive progressive change by seeking out and cultivating the brightest minds and giving them voice, reach, and impact. To this end, the Marketing Manager will embody and communicate UC Press's progressive mission through comprehensive marketing strategies. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Marketing, this role involves crafting and executing integrated plans for print and digital products, aligning with seasonal schedules and budgets. The ideal candidate will leverage various marketing channels including email, digital/print ads, social media, and content marketing to drive sales, increase market awareness, and enhance customer engagement. The Marketing Manager will be responsible for managing a portfolio of our lead titles, with key expertise in author engagement opportunities, resource and support development, and strategies for expanding their profiles. Agility and market responsiveness are essential, as is collaboration as a member of the Books Marketing Team to keep the team updated on best practices for product searchability.

Responsibilities 40% Marketing Campaign Execution

Appropriately prioritize titles and create marketing campaigns that reach appropriate audiences for the assigned portfolio of lead titles.

Oversee title‑level campaign expenditures in partnership with Marketing Associate.

Partner with Marketing Collateral Producer to create and execute promotional tactics in a timely manner.

Collaborate with the Marketing Coordinator and Marketing Collateral Producer to oversee and approve final output, including advertising, emails, and conference materials.

Creates communication plans that include email announcements, content marketing, and social media around pre and post‑pub activations.

Partner with internal colleagues and departments as needed to bring titles to market.

Conducts and share regular reporting on campaign performance to stakeholders and team members.

20% Author Relations Strategies

Identify and recommend author engagement opportunities and channels.

Coordinate closely with peers to ensure author interests and perspectives are integrated into promotional campaigns.

Advise on best practices around author collaboration and engagement.

Deliver annual report to the team / department / internal colleagues in key expertise areas.

Deploy annual author surveys and analyze results.

20% Position Products for the Market

Advise on packaging titles and covers for the market.

Develop creative taglines and regularly refresh messaging on various channels.

Advise on key selling points for the sales teams (sales reps, booksellers, online retailers).

Launch products into marketplace.

Review and approve mechanicals.

Update title information in various databases and promotional materials.

20% Marketing liaison for assigned authors

In partnership with Publicist, communicate marketing plan and promotional efforts to authors.

Advise authors on building their profiles in marketing channels (social media, website).

Collaborate with authors on promoting their title.

Respond to and troubleshoot author inquiries.

Assist academic writers in marketing initiatives, emphasizing audience for their field and market reach.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of five years related experience in marketing, communications, sales, or publishing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Understanding of marketing principles, strategies, techniques, and practices.

Excellent project management and organizational skills: proven ability to track, prioritize and complete work within deadlines.

Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

Expertise in relationship management; specific experience working with authors is a plus.

Interest and enthusiasm in publishing and serving authors as part of a mission‑driven workplace.

Solid knowledge of programs, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Product Suite, with an interest and ability in learning new software and web‑based programs.

Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with developed political acumen.

Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external customers.

Highly motivated and goal‑oriented, with a solutions‑oriented attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

Basic knowledge of the organization, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.

Education

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training required.

Travel Requirements 10% Travel to academic and industry conferences.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS The person hired will be required to live in California and report to work on‑site at UC's Office of the President in Oakland, CA at least two days per week (currently Wednesday and Thursday).

Payscale: $103,000 - $108,000 annual, commensurate with experience.
