Description The University of California San Diego is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Director, Athletic Communications. UC San Diego, located in La Jolla, is a world‑premier research university with over 35,000 students and a strong tradition of academic and athletic excellence. UC San Diego Athletics sponsors 24 varsity sports and is a member of NCAA Division I in the Big West Conference.

The incumbent will work with the Associate Athletic Director/Communications to plan, develop and implement an ongoing communications program for the intercollegiate athletics department, enhancing UC San Diego’s mission to be a premiere NCAA athletics program. Responsibilities include overseeing and coordinating game‑management operations for the 24 intercollegiate athletics programs, outreach to campus, community and media outlets, maintaining the athletic website and social media channels, responding to public or media inquiries, assisting in gathering and preparing news and information, and supporting the athletic philosophy consistent with that of the UC San Diego Athletic Department and NCAA.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Professional knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of an NCAA Division I athletic program.

Working knowledge of news, media communications, and media relations; proven track record of writing and developing promotional materials and activities for intercollegiate athletics, including press releases, features, and biographies.

Knowledge of electronic communication tools and experience with graphic design, editing, and layout of publications; proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop, and sport‑specific statistics programs preferred.

Knowledge of UC San Diego’s mission, vision, goals, and programs.

Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills and political acumen, with the ability to exercise independent judgment, initiative, tact, diplomacy, flexibility, and patience when interacting with diverse populations.

Good organizational skills; ability to work independently or collaboratively under pressure to meet deadlines and make editorial decisions.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and to manage the compilation, evaluation, and distribution of sports results, statistics, and other data.

Experience managing officials, scorers, and press tables at home athletic events, and overseeing sports information and game‑management personnel.

Working knowledge of intercollegiate sports, NCAA regulations, and Big West Conference rules.

Knowledge of various social media platforms and their use to engage constituents.

Special Conditions

Position is a campus security authority (CSA) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy.

Pay Transparency Act: Annual Full Pay Range: $65,800 - $115,000 (prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%). Hourly Equivalent: $31.51 - $55.08. Compensation factors include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, and certifications.
