Job Description The Department of African American Studies at Syracuse University seeks a part-time instructor to teach two sections of AAS 201: Writing About Black Culture, a 3-credit undergraduate course for the Spring 2026 semester. This course focuses on expository writing through critical analysis of African American literature, art, music, and historical ideas, developing writing skills and critical thinking.
Compensation and Hours Pay Range: $1,440–$2,000 per credit hour. Faculty pay is based on education and experience and is subject to department funding.
Hours: Teach two sections (Mon/Wed 3:45–5:05 pm and Mon/Wed 5:15–6:30 pm). Office hours are required.
Qualifications
Doctoral training in Black Studies and Humanities preferred.
Demonstrated ability to teach expository writing and critical analysis of African American cultural materials.
Strong communication and organizational skills.
Responsibilities
Teach two sections of AAS 201: Writing About Black Culture.
Develop and update the class syllabus.
Order books and materials before the class start date.
Prepare lectures, projects, and assignments.
Maintain scheduled office hours.
Present instruction based on competency and performance levels.
Reschedule or substitute classes when necessary for illness or emergency.
Work with the academic unit to maintain student learning outcomes.
Submit mid‑semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
Grade assignments and exams in a timely manner.
Provide department‑sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
Complete all other course‑related duties outlined by department policies for part‑time instructors.
