Location: Campus (Syracuse University)

Pay Range: Salary offers will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the home department and discipline of the position. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months of salary unless otherwise specified.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Hours: One section will be taught – M001‑Tu/Th 12:30 – 1:50 pm. Office hours are required.

Job Description The Department of African American Studies seeks a part‑time instructor for the 2026 spring semester to teach an introductory level course (AAS 206) on music among people of African descent in American communities. The course (3 credits) introduces students to the broad range of Black musical artistry, including Gospel, Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop/Rap, Blues, Reggae, and musical influences of immigrants from Africa and the diaspora. It addresses the social and political significance of Black music and the politics and technologies of Black aesthetics.

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined based on their per‑credit rate history within the hiring department.

All course offerings are subject to fund availability and enrollment.

Qualifications

Doctoral training in Black Studies and/or the Humanities.

Responsibilities

Teach one section (AAS 206) Introduction: African American Music.

Develop and/or update a class syllabus.

Order the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.

Prepare lectures, projects, or other student assignments; maintain regularly scheduled office hours.

Present instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.

Meet all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should make your best effort to reschedule the class or obtain a substitute.

Submit completed mid‑semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.

Grade student assignments and exams in a timely manner.

Provide department‑sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
