Responsibilities The Department of Music in the Lamar D. Fain College of Fine Arts at Midwestern State University invites applications for a full‑time, 9‑month tenure‑track Assistant Professor and Director of Choral Activities to begin August 2026.

As a faculty member in the Department of Music, you will be expected to:

Direct and recruit for the choirs (Midwestern Singers, Oratorio Chorus);

Teach diction, choral literature, and applied voice lessons;

Develop a record of research/creative activity;

Assess students, hold office hours, and engage in department, college, and university service.

The Lamar D. Fain College of Fine Arts encompasses undergraduate programs in art, mass communication, music, and theatre. The college prides itself on ensuring that its students do what they study and is committed to offering individualized instruction in functional, safe, modern surroundings. Emphasis is placed on applying classroom learning to process and performance. Students are taught to create within their disciplines and are also challenged to evaluate the quality of what they have created, to assess the effect of their creations on the wider culture, and to aspire to professionalism and excellence.

The Department of Music at Midwestern State University, a National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accredited institution, offers four undergraduate degrees—the Bachelor of Music in Performance, the Bachelor of Music with Teacher Certification, the Bachelor of Musical Arts, and the Bachelor of Arts in Music—to a student population of approximately 60 majors.

Requirements Applicants are required to have:

A completed doctoral degree in music;

Successful teaching experience in choral conducting;

A record of successful artistic/professional musical achievements.

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

A completed doctoral degree in music with specialization in choral conducting and/or vocal performance;

Substantial experience with music ensemble recruitment and retention;

Experience collaborating with choral directors in junior and senior high school programs;

Successful teaching experience in studio voice instruction, vocal performance, musical theatre direction, vocal accompanying, or other similar skills.

Standard Requirements Requires the ability to maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Personal cell phone usage may be required to complete position duties, including multi‑function authentication requirements. Regular reliable attendance is required.

This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check. Position is designated as a Responsible Employee as outlined by Title IX. May serve as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
