Newscast Producer – Nexstar Media Group, Inc., Washington, DC

Nexstar Media Inc. has an immediate opening for a news producer who brings creativity and innovative thinking to the role. The Producer will be responsible for newscasts airing on the newly formed duopoly in the Washington, DC Market #8 DMA. The Producer will work with newsroom leadership, anchors, production team and field crews to create strong and well‑paced newscasts. Candidates must have a proven track record that demonstrates ownership and appropriate showcasing of big story coverage, breaking news, and weather.

Washington, DC is the center for the nation’s politics, but the market offers so much more. The city is home to some of the best museums in the country, from the Smithsonian to the National Museum of African American History and Culture to the National Archives. You will find year‑round theaters with live shows, concerts, street festivals and more. DC is also home to professional basketball, baseball, football, hockey and sports teams. There are National Parks and bike trails throughout. DC also offers an amazing food scene. More than 20 restaurants received Michelin stars in 2021 alone. Responsibilities

Produces newscasts for broadcast across all platforms

Writes and orders news stories

Approves scripts

Balances news and feature content to create compelling broadcasts

Edits video

Writes stories for the website and other eMedia platforms

Interacts with viewers and users on social media sites

Performs other duties as assigned

Reports news stories for broadcast, describing the background and details of events

Arranges interviews with people who can provide information about stories

Reviews copy and corrects errors in content, grammar and punctuation, following prescribed editorial style and formatting guidelines

Reviews and evaluates notes taken about event aspects to isolate pertinent facts and details

Determines a story’s emphasis, length and format, and organizes material accordingly

Researches and analyzes background information related to news stories to provide complete and accurate information

Gathers information about events through research, interviews, experience or attendance at political, news, sports, artistic, social or other functions

Pitches stories to news managers and news producers which are relevant to the local community

Receives assignments and evaluates leads and tips to develop story ideas

Discusses issues with producers and/or news managers to establish priorities or positions

Checks reference materials such as books, news files or public records to obtain relevant facts

Revises work to meet editorial approval or to fit time requirements

Shoots and edits news events and news reports

Produces and presents reports for all platforms

Ensures that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality

Performs special projects and other duties as assigned

Requirements & Skills

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work‑related experience

Fluency in English

Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

Minimum two years’ experience in news operations

Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment

Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously

Flexibility to work any shift
