St. Pauls United Church of Christ, an Open and Affining congregation in a vibrant urban setting, seeks a music leader to inspire worship through varied musical traditions. The role is offered as either a part‑time Director of Music or a full‑time Director of Music & Organist (OCM).

Part‑time Director of Music This position, not requiring a chorister or organist, provides musical leadership for all church choirs, bands, and orchestras. The Director researches, plans, implements, and monitors the ministry of music to actively engage the congregation in worship. Responsibilities include budgeting, volunteer management, repertoire selection, and rehearsal coordination.

Work Schedule Approximately twenty hours per week, including rehearsals and performances during evenings and weekends, especially Sundays, as mutually agreed with the Senior Pastor.

Education and Experience Advanced degree in Music; minimum five years in Church Music Ministry. Proficiency in supervising choirs and musicians, and teaching music and choral directing. A passion for gospel, folk, jazz, and other musical genres is essential.

Required Skills and Abilities Excellent musicianship, strong interpersonal skills, patience, clarity, and effective communication. Ability to adhere to schedules, complete projects timely, cooperate with teams, and work with all levels of ministry partners.

Physical Requirements Prolonged sitting or standing; use of hands for instruments, repetitive movements, occasional lifting up to 20 pounds. Requires good hearing, focus, and clear speech.

Duties & Responsibilities

Lead worship, plan and execute the music program in collaboration with clergy.

Coordinate hymn accompaniment between organist and gospel quartet.

Choose appropriate music for each Sunday and special services.

Encourage vibrant congregational singing.

Schedule rehearsals, set objectives, and manage budgets.

Recruit choir members, soloists, and musicians.

Supervise maintenance of the music library and equipment.

Provide audio support for building areas as needed.

Network with broader church musician community and attend conferences.

Continuously develop personal professional competence.

Perform other duties as necessary.

Full‑time Director of Music & Organist (OCM) In addition to the Director’s duties, the OCM provides professional organ and piano music for all services, seasonal/special services, weddings, and funerals. The OCM may receive additional compensation from wedding or funeral parties.

Work Schedule (OCM) Approximately twenty hours per week, including rehearsals and performances during evenings and weekends, especially Sundays, as mutually agreed with the Senior Pastor.

Education and Experience (OCM) Degree in organ performance, music, or related field; minimum two years of worship‑setting experience.

Required Skills and Abilities (OCM) Proficient organ playing, accurate sight‑reading, cueing musicians, leading choir or congregation, understanding of church worship services, and clear friendly communication with pastors, ministry partners, and congregation.

Additional Duties (OCM)

Select and provide appropriate organ music for regular and special services.

Rehearse with choir and provide private teaching lessons as needed.

Report on instrument maintenance and oversee use of the chancel organ.

Accompany hymns, anthems, and service music; prepare solos for Prelude, Offertory, and Postlude.

Receive additional compensation for weddings and funerals, based on events.

Perform other duties as necessary.

Salary Range: Part‑time $40,000–$60,000; Full‑time $80,000–$110,000.
